The late President of the Canadian Executive, the Hoa. D'Arcy MeGee, has just been visiting our neighbours of Nova Scotia and New Bruns- wick in the interest, manifestly, of intercolonial affairs; and some few of our Continental contem- poraries are of opinion that he has “ lost the grace of Lis mission” by teo long association with the Sandfield administration. Now what are the facta. The two provinces of United Canada had until lately but two political parties; but now there is a third one in Canada East. “ John A. McDonald cersus John Sandtield McDonald and Geerge Brown,” represent the present state of things in Canada West; whilst “George Cartier versus Dorion and Sicotte et al,” expressed the state of parties in Canada East until very recently.

John A. MeDousld, who is a Protestant and representative of the Orangemen, co-operates im polities, on the part of Canada West, with George Cartier, whe is the representative of the “ church party” so called, on the part of Canada East.

On the other hand, John Sandfield McDonald, whe is a Catholic, and George Brown, a “ broad Protestant,” represent jvintly the liberals of Canada West, and co-operate with the Reds or liberals of Canada East, who until lately have been led by Dorion and Sicotte. But Dorion deserted hie party ou the Intercolonial Railway, leaving behind him in the Cabinet, Sicotte, Me- Gee and others who were in favour of the pro- ject. Things continued in this state until it pleased Sandfield MeDonald to resume official ties with Dorion at the expense of Sicette and the Rail- way. Now, MeGee having followed Sicotte into office and out of it again on thie yery Railway question, seems to us to have fairly and fully es- tablished hie mght to be considered tlie “ repre- seatative man” of thia very interest; and if suc- cessful in this and the federal question, we shall net be unwilling to regard him as deserving the

The Mayor and City Couneil of Charlottetown have forwarded a lengthy Address to the Queen, praying that Her Majesty will be pleased to with- hold Her Royal assent to the Act passed in the last session of the General Assembly, to authorize the Government to sell the Military Barracks in Char- lottetown. It seems that some of the citizens wish to have the Barracks and Battery placed in the cus- tody and under the caro of the Mayor and City Coanejl, in order te form a place of healthfel re- ereation for the citizens and their families, and a parade ground for the Volunteer Force. This may be al! very well, but if said people were very anxious about the health of the citizens they would certainly endeavour to remove without delay that nuisayee, the old Market Hoase, from our principal paisere.—Prorusrast.

But why will net the provinces interested invite Eng- land to recur to ber original proposition of a guarantee for £*,009,000, and by her aid convert their present and prospective siz per cents. into “threes” or three and a half, and thus enable them te borrow the required sum for completing the read without any sensible increase te their pre- sent liabilities, but with manifold increase jn the shape of general advantage to the provinces and to the empire. The unsapperted Bonds of the provinees sell at par or even at premium when bearing interest at six per cent. Now, why might not other Bonds, if bearing the Imperial guarantee, sell equally well at 34 per cent. Let these, then, “retire” those, and the saving effected by the operation would be fully sufficient to cover the extra loan ‘ur completing this most unportant Work.

If England were sincere at first in offering to guarantee £7,000,000 for the work, why should she hesitate now to make good her assurances. Or was it for saving her from them that she con- ferred a governorship upon the man (Hineks) who, in doing so, left the country which trusted him involved in insuperable difficulties, and unable to- day to complete this connection which promises so tempting a future to B. N. America.

Or friends of the Vindicator betray rather more spleen than good sense in the following extract which we take from their No. of Friday last :—

“We must, however, say, that althongh the lite- rary contributions of the incipled * professor”’ will deubtless add to Mr. Whelsn’s finances, yet they will add bat little to the character of the paper in which they appear, or to that of its pro- prietor. We may also state that we therougk|ly un- derstand and apgrediane the motives which induce our friend to devote so much of bis valuable space to the undisguised blackguardism of the self-styled ‘medicine man.” The combined attacks of noto- rus qaaeks, of open and avowed enemies, and of base and double dealing friends, on the VinbicaToR nod its publishers, merely convince us that we have parsued an independent and straightforward course While conducting this journal.’

“ Professor” Brevan’s advertising businesa is the matter referred to. We can see nothing le- gally, morally, or professionally wrong in pub- lishing this person's advertisements, any more than it would be wrong to publish the advertise- ments ef other enterprising Professors whose wonderful achievements in the world of science, but particularly medical science, are every day announced to an admiring world. We can see no reason for joining in a hue and ery against any stranger whe comes to push his fortunes here,without violating any law of the land, merely ou the ground of two or three unsupported state- meats which have Leen circulated prejudicial to his character. If “ Professor Brenau’’ be a hum- bug. and a quack, and all that sort of thing, we have no substantial proof of it; and in the ab- sence of any safeguards against the practice of quackery, such as a legally constituted Medical Society might supply, the community, we think, thould be left to forin their own opinions of him by experience. If quackery is to be put down, let it be done in a legal way; and Jet the inoume- rable nostrums advertised by foreign pretenders be subjected to seieutific teats, befure a competent body, and approved of, before they are allowed to pase over an apothecary’s counter It is a Most invidious thing for a newspaper publisher to decide arbitrarily on the merits of any particular Class of advertisers. Cases might often occur in Which great injustice would be done to individuals and to the community, if all editors should set themeetves up as judges to decide that one adver-

Hills & Underwood, of Norwich and Lon don, possesses the taste and aroma of the finest White Wine Vinegar ef France; and being free from the gluten present in all Vinewars manutfae tured iu the old way, it is not liable to become decomposed by kee yng or tocuuse disorder in weak stowachs. It contains no Sulphuric or other mineral Acids, such as contaminates all the ordinary Malt Vinegars of the United Kingdom, and is stronger by nearly 20 per cent in pure Malt Acid than the Vine- gar on sale in London not manufactured on this excellentsystem. A Vinegar thus perfectly aciditied must be far more wholesome, grateful and mild than our ordinary half fermented Vitriol holding Vine- vars, and preferable to much even of the pretended Wine Yineyar of France, which is most commonly nothing more than the acrimonious Acid distilled from wood, flavoured in imitation of the genuine article.
