By that time most of the operations will have become auto- matically controlled through radar and electronic devices.

_In cargo flying also, growth will continue; and just as the railways are now doing piggy-back operations with trailers, we should see some form of combined aircraft-ground operation; planes combined with trucks to offer direct express and cargo services by use of through pal- lets or pods, in an integrated air, road and poss rail , movement. This would be possible even without radically new technical developments . in aviation, such as the hovercraft or aircar, which moves about a few

feet from the ground on a cushion of air, or the Flying Saucer being developed by Car Avro, which holds promise of major development along completely new lines.

“By its geography, both dom- . estically and internationally,” said Mr. Hees, “Canada and the jet age are na-ural partners.’ The Depart- ment of Transport will do all it can to make this partnership a most fruitful one.” Well, here’s hoping.

The French now are incensed at the American press for revealing what went on, and this. does indeed appear to be a case of irresponsible journalism.

At their Ottawa gathering last week, the Liberals accused the Tories of an-extraordinary crime. They

ed the most awesome publicity machine in Canadian political history. It was so big, so good and so efficient,

in their view, that there was some- |:

thing vaguely sinister about the whole thing. This was high (if back- hand) praise indeed, coming as it did from a party which had itself dis- played an amazing mastery of public relations techniques during the last 22 years that it held office nationally.

But, as Arthur Blakely points out in the Montreal Gazette, the Con- servatives had a different story at their convention during the ‘previous week. Far from being impressed by their publicity machine, they round- ly criticised it on the ground that it was not shedding enough light on what the Government was doing.

A special Public Relations Com-_ mittee recommended the establish- ment of a vigorous publicity or- ganization within the party which would, in future, keep people better informed. Cabinet ministers were ad- vised to make policy announcements in a form which could be more readily understood.

“This-of course,” says the Gazette columnist, “raises the interesting question of how the Liberals, who feel that they can’t scream loudly enough to make themselves heard over the constant din of the Government’s public relations machine, will feel when these publicity operations are stepped up. They may feel that it just isn’t possible...
