Lettera expressing their regret and their appreciation of the objects and aims of the Caledonian Clu were read by the President.

The spacious dining room cf the hetel was appropriately decorated. A large can- vass, in oil, painted by Miss Chishoim, representiog Robert Burns reciting the Winter's Tale before his Edinburgh friends, was hung upon the wall at the head of the

table. It is needless to publish the **menu” which was worthy of the high reputation which has been won by the

Hotel Davies for the excellence of its table. The honored ‘Chieftain o’ the puddin,” race” was introduced, accompanied by the inspiring strains of the bagpipes, and was

David Laird spoke for ‘The land of brown heath aud shaggy wood,” relating many of his observations and impressions while visiting Scotland a few years ago. Mr. Caulder followed with a capital song, the ‘“‘Highlandman’s Toast.” ** His Honor

R. Davisen responded with ‘Red, White and Blue,” while Lieutenant Colonel Moore spoke of the importance of mam- taining military forces in view of the fact that the day has not yet dawned when swords shal! be beaten into pruning hooks, and «xpressed the opinion that if Britain were attacked, the brave miliamen cf Aus tralia and Canada would hasten to battle on her behalf. ‘Our guests and Sister So eieties’ drew forth lively speeches from Messrs. McCourt and D. OM. Reddin, Jr. Mr. Good sanga goodfrong, and ‘*‘The Bench and Bar” was responded to by Mr. H. C. McDonald. “Our Worthy Chiet” and * Our Ex President” brought from Hon. Senator Macdonald and A. McNeill, E q , interest- ing and ek quent speeches. Une of the most interesiing features of the dinner was the recitation of ‘‘Lochiel’s Warning” by Messrs. McBean and Cveulder. ‘The Press” was responded to by Messrs. Cot- ton, of Tue Examinenr, and McCourt, of the Watchman. ‘The revered memory of cur departed clansmen and absent friends” was du'y honored. Mr. James Robertson, of this city, recited a poem of his own com- position on the Seotiish Gathering at Char- lottetown—ar exceedingly good effort— and Mr. Morrison. of Halifax, recited “Charles Edward, at Culleden” ia splendid style. “The Lossies” were tenderly dealt with ty Mr. Fritz.Moore. A Visit to the Upper Prince Street School.

Yesterday, the 2¢th inst , 1 had the pleas. | ure of paying a visit to the Upper Prince! Street School, where I epent several pleasant | hours which were very profitable to me as a teacher. Ihe school, in my estimation is what a school should be. The Sdiscipline is exce!- lent. -The teachers, painstaking and affable, seem to possers the sympathy and good will of the pupils; and their dealings with them, both in class and in recreation, is commerd- able. They have also the advantage of having an excellent teacher of French, who, in addition to teaching the grammar, can also converse with them in that language. I had,

Oa December Ist the following changes will take cffect in connection with the De- partment of Railways and Canals: Mr. Trudeau, Depu'y Minister, will retire and be succeeded by Mr. Schrieber, who will assume the combined duties of Depuy Minister and Chief Engineer of Railways and thus affect a saving of $6,000 in sal- aries. Mr. Pottinger wiil be promoted to the general nanagement of Government railways, wiih headquarters at Moncton.
