“The valleys and the hills Are clad in emerald sheen ;” (Though very few of them Can anywhere be seen). **No land can be more blest Than this sweet home of ours,” Though garden fruits are scarce, There's always lots of flowers.

“Through spring and summer days Sweet birds of plumage fair” Make mark for sportsman’s shot While flying through the air. ‘“‘When autumn days are o'er, And ice and snow appear,” It’s then we start the fun, The jolliest ot the year.

**While other lands may boast

Of ever-spiinging flowers,” The boast of first-class ‘‘spads”

Is heard through parts of ours. “Yet, in our own sweet home

Letter from Councillor Hogan.

Sir,—It appears from present prepara- tions that the government intend to adept the Railway wharf asa plaice of landing torthe steamer Stanley during the early wister months.

This, sir, will prove a serious obstruction to the trade of the citizens of Charlotte- town, from the fact that the first ice forza ing on the river makes the safest natarul means of crossing, but when broken up from day to day wil! render it unsafe during the whole winter, endangering the lives of citizens and the public in general.

He selects out of the lot two(who live in close proximity to ‘‘Fairholm”) who believed that is the place for the hotel,; one of the two runs a drug bus- iness alinost withia a stouve’s throw of the place, but for reasons perhaps best known to himself he did not give the opinion of the other gen- tlemen who holds quite a different opinion as to the site. I fail to see one thing to recom- mend ‘*Fairholm” as a place for a hotel, no sea breeze, no sewerage, nothing to admire but the Baptist Church.

“*Samaratin.” Sir,—The animus of ‘‘Samaratin” in Friday's issue reveals the class of the Samaratins that he represents—evidently not that noble fellow whose record is found in Luke, 10-33 35—but I rather suspect that he is a representative of those fellows by that name, a record of whose conduct you will find in Luke 9-53. There was a good Samaratin, but there were also Samaratins tha3 were not the most noble in their words or deeds, This modern ‘‘Samaratin’” reminds me of a crow ; he does not notice the thousands of living, active beings on hill and plain, bat so soon 38 his eye detects a carcass you will hear from him. Such a ease as the following is never re- ferred to by our modern *Sameratin.” Some months since during the progress of the service in the Baptiist Mission Hall, on Chestnut street, a poor drunken woman, driven to desperation by the cruelty of a uon-church going husband, staggered in She was at once made as comfortable as possible. At the close of the service she was accompanied to her poverty-stricken, desolate home by Christian ladies, watched over, provided for, sympathized with im her effortato reform. 1 know that this is not 4 solitary instance, nor are these confined to the Church and Mission above referred to by any means. This critic of churches and of their work, not being a representa- tive of the good Samaratin, but that other class, itis hardly to be expected that he sheuld notice cases such as the above. The Prisoner Was Liberated.

CANADIAN COMMISSIONER IN FRANCE SUCCESSFULLY INTERCEDES,

The Hon. Hector Fabre, Canadiar Com- missioner iu France, has succeeded in getting a Canadisn Frenchman out of jail under peculiar circumstances. Villedary- Dumaine, a young Frenchman, who for some years was night watchman et the parliament buildings at Quebec, weni home to Janicot, Dordogne, to visit his mother. He took with him his wife, a French- Canadian woman, and his children. On the way out from New York to Cherbough, Madame Dumaine gave birth to a child. On arriving at home, Dumaine, who bad neglected to perform his military service, was arrested and incarcerated at Limoges untilthe stood his trial before a council of war. The Canadian commissioner, in- formed of the fact, wrote to M. de Frey- cinet, Minister of War, and stated circum- stances had prevented Dumaine from benefitting by the Amnesty law of 1889, In answer to his letter, Mr. Fabre was informed by Col. Pamard, Chief of the Cabinet of War, that proceedings had been discontinued. The man has been liber ated.

The de- ceased was a native of Annandale, Lot 56, where he was held in high esteem by all who were acquainted with him. He left his native Province about four years ago and engaged in the carpenter business at Everett, Mass., where he had up to the time of the accident been very successful. The deceased leaves a wife to mourn the loss of a kind and affection- ate husband. seeniliinngee
