Tus examination of James and William Crosby, for stealing sheep from Mr. Alexander McKinley, of the Royalty, took place before Theoph. BesBrisay, Esq., in Queen’s County Jail, to-day. We understand there is strong circumstantial evidence against James for stealing the sheep and William for receivin, them.

Tae schr. Landseer, Malady, from Prince Edward Isiand for Baltimore, with potatoes, left Vineyard Haven, December 19, and when off Fire Island she hove to, but was blown to sea 209 miles and lost all water from off the deck. Friday morning, the 27th, the schr. sent a boat to the Sow and Pigs Light vessel, and the captain supplied her with wood and water to last her to Newport.

Tae market was fairly attended to-day. Prices were as follow: Beef, small, from 5 to 12 cents; do. by the qr., from 34 to 7 cents ; mutton, from 4 to 8 cents; lamb, from 4 to 5 cents; geese, each, from 40 to 60 cents; ducks, from 20 to 39 cents ; chickens, from 30 to 45 cents; butter, fresh, from 20 to 23 cents; do. by the tub, from 14 to 17 cents ; hay, from 40 to 50 cents; oats, from 28 to 29 cents.

AMPUTATION OF A LIMB INJURED EIGHT YEARS aco.—The New Glasgow, N. S. ‘‘Chronicle,” of this week, reports that a young man, Freeman McKean, son of Samuel McKean, Esq., of Melrose, St. Mary’s, recent- ly had his leg amputated above the knee. The amputation was rendered necessary from in- juries received on the knee eight years ago, which had become diseased, causing great suffering. The young man had previously submitted to a very trying operation in the Hospital at Halifax, but obtatned no relief. He is considered out of danger now, and ex- pects to be able to move about ere long.

On the 3!st ult., a man named Theophilus N->Mullin was killed by the falling of a tree, at Georgetown Road, Lot 50. It appears that

he deeeased, in company with Mr. Patrick Cairns were cutting a tree each which lodged

them, avd when in the act of doiag so the tree fell suddenly, a large branch of one of them struck the deceased on the head and mashed it in, causing instantaneous death. Mr. Cairns being a short distance from the deceased, and there being some bushes between them, could not see what occurred, and was very near being struck himself with another branch. He called out to the deceased, and not receiving a reply went to where he was lying, and, to his horror, found that life had departed. He turned the head of the deceased to see if any life remained, but he was still in death.

Mr. MelIntosh, editor of the ‘‘Citizen,” was elected Mayor of Ottawa to-day by four hundred majority.

Wali Mahomet has refused to obey Yanoob Khan’s call to Cabul.

Sin,—In the issue of the Darty Examiner, of the 30th ult., there appeared a communica- tion over the signature of ‘John Doyle,” which is erronous in every particular. The article dares contradic- tion. Now, the first part of his letter, wherein he states that [asked him why he called me a thief in court; this statement is entirely un- truthful, and I ean produce the evidence of the other ‘‘three young men” to substantiate what I say. Also, about his stating I had'an ‘‘old score” to settle with him, is equally un- true. te (Mr. Doyle) has a very nice way of sliding over things, and introduces the “Frenchman's rag,” etc., as my reason for quarrelling with him. But the real unvar- ished truth of the matter is this: that he several times previously came into my hotel,
