Over the past weekend Panther teams won two, lost two and tied one which made a real Stand—off. The big. sports story was, of course, the soccer games, for which ’ Vincie Mulligan and his charges travelled to St: John's for two games need— ing one win. They played the first to a soorless draw and won the second over favoured hometown Memorial 2-1 with Tom Hogan and Scott Neil accounting for our two markers. This brings the season record f‘to 5—2—3 which is enough to put us in this weekend's playoff series in Fredericton N.B. , a knock- out tournament in which we first face Saint Mary's.
In the only match we played them this year we fell be— hind 4—0, then made ‘a great
. comeback to knot it up at
4—4 but dropped it 6—4 as
we pressed. Our chances look GOOD. We understand a con— tingent of Panther fans will be making a trek to the N.B. Capitol to give voCal sup- ’ port. The game starts at noon and the final will be played ' at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday.
In hockey we might ob— serve that, although we have always regretted the resort to fisticuffs in a game (each to his trade and we have never seen boxers re- sort to hOCkey when .frus— .. trated.) we understood what he meant when we heard a spectator paradoxically re- mark that, unless they took the non—fighting edict off the hockey fules, somebody will be hurt! We thought the two games very Chippy. In Friday's game, after a score- less initial period we took a two goal lead after goals by Bobby MacDonald and Norman Beck (both as— sisted by Brian O'Stroski) and seemed to be assured

got a late goal in the second, however, evened it up midway in the third and scored the winner on a slap shot after

a face off in our end. They garnered an insurance marker on an empty net with seconds to go and scated off with a 4—2 win. We thought it a well
played game. In Sunday's game
it was the opposition St. F.X. who got the jump as they scored two early goals but . it was 3—3 ‘at the end of the first, 5—4 at the end of the second‘ and the third period was scoreless. We thought this game somewhat sloppy. Brian O'Stroski and Norman Beck both scored twice while Terry McKenna blasted in one of his terrific slap shots. The team travels to Freder-
icton where they'ss play U.N.B.
and St’. Thomas on Saturday and Sunday. The six kockey players on the Soccer team could have an interesting weekend! Inasmuch as both teams are in our section, two hockey wins would be most acceptable. Basketball fans have been
impatiently awaiting the
Opening games which are
scheduled for our gym this weekend as both teams play on both Saturday night
and Sunday afternoon. Wo— men's Basketball against St. Thomas and men's a-
, gainst the U. of Maine at
Machias. Coach George Nbrrison's girls have been working hard in preparation for these games and this will be the first indication of what kind of a season they will have. Of the 13 players listed, 8 are returnees. Sue Betts (last year's M.V.P.);is
back along with Cathy Chandler,
Libby Baldwin, Ann MacAdam, Karen Rowell, Dawn MacLeod,
Dale Enman, and Velvet Charters.
Newcomers include locals Colleen Rossiter, and Dama Noonan, while the New Bruns— wickers are Colleen MacDonald, Elaine Foote, and Debbie MacAloney, the latter two being presently sidelined”
