A sham fight would amuse the cilizms and be the means of the better discipline of the militiamen, in the cise of their being called to the front in a few days. Now that Mr, , Coleman has offered the public cheap rail- | way fares, many, no doubt, would take i the advantage of the choap fares to see the Volunteers manoeuvering

A Nuisance.
Sin —So much has been said and written about the dilapidated state of the sidewalks and streets of this city, that by this time it might be supposed the civic authorities would feel somewhat aroused to duty, and make some effort tu have the many nuisan- ces complained.of, removed to some con- siderable extont; but it appears that they are quite easy about sanitary effairs. Coming from the Railway Station this merning, and in front of the Railway Hotel, almost the first thing which pre- sented itself to my view, was a quantity of stagnant water,the efilavium from which was not that of roses, and the very sight most disgusting and revolting. In a city like this, and under tho very ecyes of the authorities, such a nuisance should not exist.

Taree drunks were disposed of by fines ranging from $1 to $10. A woman named Welsh was sent to jail for one month for frequenting a house of ill fame. An as- sault case was withdrawn.......This morn- ing two vendors were prosecuted for selling butter short in weight. In one case the butter worth ‘$1.30 was confiscated, and the vendor fined $1 30 and costs. In the other the butter worth $2.30 was confiscated and the vendor fired $2.30 and costs. This will be a warning to vendors to have the prints properly weighed.

Toe Jusitee Sincers.—In November, 1879, the Jubilee Singers gave a concert in Amesbury, Mass., the home of the (Quaker poet, Whittier. The following is an extract from a letter of Mr. F. J. Loudin, describ- ing a visit to Mr. Whittier, written for a Ravenna (Ohio) paper :—‘‘Being about to depart, we sang a slave song. As Mr. Whittier jistened, he stood with bowed head, the tears rolling down his cheeks. It was with great difficulty that we could sing, so deeply were we touched by the experience of this hour now closing. I shall never forget the expression on that illumined face at that parting moment. He stepped for- ward and shook hands, but so deep were his feelings that he did not speak until he came to the two Siast. I was the last to shake hands with him, and he said, ‘Good- bye; God bless you all !’

A Souris Man Drowned.
By private letter to a friend, we learn that a sad accident took place on the United States coast, on the 29th of April last, whereby ao Islander and three other men lost their lives by drowning. The Islander was Capt, John R. McDonald, of Souris. The three others were named Richard Bor- den, Robert Hingley and Michael Gracey. They belonged to the schooner Neponsit, commanded by Captain Frye. She was off the Virginia coast when the sad accident
curred. The particulars, ax given by Mr. Alex. McPhee, of Big Marsh, are as follows :— The men were out in a seine boat when she shipped a sea, which half filled her. Me- Donald and the other sailors bailed her out, and when the boat was dry she took a sud- den lurch, and turned keel upwards. The men succeeded in getting on the boat's bottom six times, and were as many times washed off. The wind blew so strong at the time that it was impossible for McPhee and a com;anion to rescue them. The sea was runving mouctains high, and McPiee could not get his dory an iach ahead, much less reach the mon in time to save life.
Capt. McDouald was deservedly well liked. He leaves 4 grief-stricken widow and three little children in East Boston to ’ mourn his sad end.

His horse became unmanageable and ran eway, Mr. McMillan was thrown violently from the sulkey, and he was taken to hie home unconscious, Fis physicans found he had received a severe contu- sion below the left shoulder, and thatthe lower portion of the body, both legs and arms were paralyzed. Lopes of his recovery were entertained till the evening before his death.
The funeral took place on the 16th inst., to the Indixwn River Church Cemetery. It was attended by over one hundred carriages. In Mr. McMillan’s death Kensington loses one of its best citizens—a maa who was dearly be- loved and universally respected. ‘To his wife and five children we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
