MOOSE JAW, Sass, (CF) --0l'- tgin of a mysterious inscription on a large boulder in southern Saskatchewan is puzzling an amateur archaeologist here.

W. ii. Bud Metcalf has been digging into the background of the inscription "July 1, 1791." luund on the boulder at the bot- tom of a buffalo wallow in the Kerrobert area about 60 miles east of the Alberta border.

The boulder is about three by four feet in size. two feet high. its smooth upper edges indicate the buffalo which once roamed the plains used it as a rubbing stone.

The chiselled figures on the flat upper surface apparently are quite old, but the area has been settled for only about 50 years. '

Mr. Metcaif said it would appear that if the carving were done in 1791, it would have to have been the work of an employee of the Hudson's Bay Co. However, there is no rccorti that any of them were in the district at the time.
