To-paAyY and to-morrow, St. John is to de light inthe luxury of ‘*Mendelssohn’s Uratorio Elijah.” This work is one of the most power- ful and most popular of Mendelssohn s masterpieces, and its composition actually killed the composer. It was prepared for the Biningham Festival of 1546, which Men- delssohn himself conducted, and at which time the toil, excitement and excessive mental exertion in connection therewith, eompletely broke down the composer and laid him in the dust before he had completed his thirty-ninth yeer. The melodic flow of the sacred drama, the soul-stirring incidents of the subject, and the harmonic treasures of the oratorio, rivet the attention of even an uncultivated audience, from the first note down to the last chorus, Those people who have listened to the performance can never forget the impression. We congratulate St. John on its musical activity.

It is reported, we believe correctly, that Thomas Foote, Esq., has been superannuated, and Thomas Williams, Esq., appointed to the office of Treasurer of the J. C. R, thus vacated.— Moncten Times.

We read the above with mingled feelings of pleasure and of regret—of pleasure, that the talents of Mr. Williams are receiving due acknowledgment, and that the 1. C. R. will receive a valuable addition to its staff—of regret, that our owa Railway should lose a most cfficient, cflicer who has tried in every way to further its interests, and that the city will lose a first-class resident. Mr. Williams has been on the Island nearly seven years, and is highly respected by a large circle of frierds. He took no small interest in the many charitable and socia' movements among ua, and will be remembered with feel ings of great regard. We are glad to see that the policy of interchanging cfficials is being carried out, and that Island officials are gain ing a chance of promotion to more remungra- tive posts than those at presentheld. There is much room for improvement in this respect.
