A sociological-interpretive analysis

Having the drive, but lacking the financial re- sources to go abroad this weekend, I had to again settle for all the nightlife excite- ment that Charlottetown has to offer.
After a while, bars tend to get rather boring (especially after you’ve seen Bloor St. on a Saturday night).
So, in seeking a diversion, I decided to check out one of those video dances.
. The advent of video in recent years now gives an added dimension to these social gatherings. Now people can stare at the screen in a dazed stupor as well as snap their fingers while they lean against the wall trying to look cool.
I’ve always enjoyed ob- serving people, therefore I especially find the social interaction which takes place at these little affairs fasci- nating to say the least.
'Dances make a great supplement if you’re taking a behavioral psychology course, not to mention how much fun it can be to simply watch various personal dramas unfold as the night progresses.
However, it appears that even an event such as a dance seems boundby the laws of statistics; each one sharing certain common factors and scenarios. 'Today' I shall discuss some of these factors and ponder the question
“Why do these things happen?” First of all, there will
always be a sweet innocent girl at one of these things that you have the greatest crush on, and you’d love to cuddle up with, but does she- go for you?
Hell no!
She decides to hang out with the sleaziest guy there, with the Iron Maiden crest on the back of his denim jacket, who you knOW will just use her and break her heart (not to mention maybe beating the hell out of her).
But do you say anything?
Hell no‘l,Why bother? She wouldn’t listen to you any— way; she’d probably say you were jealous and the other
guy wasn’t really all that bad, .

and just needed “a little love and understanding”.
But who cares?
Also, at these gatherings, you usually always meet up with some former flame who now has a new boyfriend who’s more handsome than you, has his own Porsche, and makes more money than your rich uncle who’s living in exile in Switzerland.
Then you're introduced to the guy, who’s so stupid if his I.Q. were one point higher he’d be a plant.
Then you ask yourself “Why does God allow ass- holes to get rich?”
Another factor common to these events is the ‘old acquaintance’ you run into; that you haven’t seen for about ten years, but he still remembers the entire story of your childhood, and decides to tell everyone in the group you’re sitting with, about the 4 time in the second grade when you got sick and threw up all over the teacher's day book.
At this point you ask your- self, “Could I get off if I plead ‘justifiable homicide’?”
And usually at least one girl (sometimes ugly, some- times cute) will come over, tug on your brand new 300 dollar Ralph Lauren tweed jacket, and ask you to dance. The first think I usually say (unless she’s really gorgeous) is, “Never touch my jacket again, or I’ll break your face.”
If she doesn’t go away after that, I say, “You’ll have to excuse me, I try to be a gentleman whenever possible, but I’m also an author, and sometimes prone to these little outbursts”.
And as John Steinbeck once said: “Authors don’t dance!”
So there you have it. Four of the most statistically prob- able things to happen to you at a dance or party. No one ' knows exactly why these things happen, it’s only known that they do.
Of course, you could always stay home, but what fun would that be?
Unless of course, you’ve- got a loving teddy bear waiting for you.

To be honest, I find it irritating to talk about this band and say, “Hey, have you heard the Scandal; fea- turing Patty Smyth album yet?”
Since Patty’s name takes such prominence in the bands title, one may be inclined to believe that she is that rocker, ‘old hairy armpits’ Patti Smith trying out her stuff with a brand new band.
This, however, is a dif- ferent Patty, thus the reason for her distinction in the band’s title is a mystery to me.
The band is: Patty Smyth (vocals), Zack Smith (guitars), Ivan Elias (bass),_ Keith
Mack (guiatars) and Tommy |
Price (drums).
They neglected to put a picture of Price’s face any- where on the album. Maybe he is not their regular drum- mer or perhaps he simply isn’t as dashing as the other band members. The latter seems unlikely when you get a look at bassist Ivan Elias’s. mug.
If you are going to buy this album on the pretention that it is all along the same lines as the title track, you can spend your $9.99 elsewhere. The album is slightly mellower than the painted face on its cover. That is no slash against the album. There is some tasty soft rock on this plastic.
Side one is packed with goodies. The title trace makes a lousy video but still rocks okay. “Beat of a Heart” and “Hands Tied” should
mellow you out. “Only the Young" is a' well crafted tributed to the misled yet enduring youth of today. Alas, the words and music for this cut were written by Steve Perry, Niel Schon, and Jonathan Cain and not by any of our Scandal; fea- turing Patty Smyth members.
“Talk to Me” on side two features some sultry singing by Patty. The tune was Written by a D. Labahn.
.Could this indeed be Doug
Lubahan, virtuoso bassist of the Ted Nugent “Penetrator” album? On the record sleeve credits Patty professes “...
and to D.L. — I’ll always love you.” Could this be the same Doug Labahn and sub- sequently the same Doug Lubahn? Golly gee, this
album is chock full of mysteriesll The album is well put
together. There aren’t any nasty surprises as you glide from one cut to the next, but that can be a minus as well as a plus. There isn’t any ex- ceptionally brilliant musician- ship on the album. The music tend to lean on the non- descript side which means any song could come sailing out of the A.M. airwaves at you. Easy listening. WARRIOR
