Woman's Temperance Union.—The la- dies of the above Union will hold a special meeting on Monday evening next, at seven o'clock, in the parlor of the Reform Club. A full attendance is requested.

Tue ‘‘ Fairy” and ‘“‘French Sporter’ are now in training at Upton Driving Park for the coming trotting match on Wednesday next. Both are in splendid condition. This race will, we anticipate, be one of the finest contests ever witnessed in this Prov- ince. Much interest is mamifested in it by the horsemen of both Counties.
We fail to see the Secretary's report of the Murray Harbor Road meeting in this morfiing’s Putriot. There is a slight differ-

WE call the attention of owr readers to See See Jones’ advertizement of Tubular Wells and Pumps. Mr. Jones seems to be the right man in the right place, and is much in favor of printer's ink. He is the Inventor and Patentee of the celebrated C. B. Pump, and first to introduce the Tubu- lar Well on the Island. All new and care- ful inventions should be tested.
Tue celebrated stallion ‘ Jeff,” well- known to our prominent horsemen, died at Souris a few days ago, on account of in- juries received from a kick on the right
nee. ‘ Jeff’ won the gold medal and championship for being the fastest stallion at Upton Park last fall, and, at the time of his death, was the fastest horse on the Island. We are glad to hear that Mr. Hardy has secured a young “‘ Jeff,” a very promising horse, four years old.
A rerson who recently visited the Qua- rantine Hospital at the Harbor’s mouth, informs us of its present disgraceful condi- tion. He says the ceiling in the bedrooms is falling from the effect of the rain which enters through the roof; the steves are completely out of order ; and the Hospital, generally, lacks everything that would be a comfort to a poor invalid. ‘‘ Indeed, ) he says, ‘‘it is dangerous for the keeper, who is a healthy man, to reside in it at present.” This being the case, we hope the authorities will immediately give it their attention, and have it repaired as soon as possible.
THERE were two cases of assault, from the country districts, tried before Theophilus DesBrisay, Esq., to-day. The first was be- tween Elijah Rolling, plaintiff, and Henry Laird, defendant, both of Cavendish. It appears that they were attending a prayer meeting on the evening of the 4th ist., and on returning homewards a fight oc- curred, in which the defendant sprained the plaintiff's left arm and inflicted other injuries. Laird was fined $10 and costs, or two months’ imprisonment. He also paid $25 for the personal damages he did Rolling in the affray. The second was a case of as- sault between Murdock, McKinnon, plain- tiff, and Murdock McLeod, defendant, of the same vicinity. It appears that McLeod was returning from this City, on the 4th inst., and was at the time a little “over the bay.” He entered the residence of Mr, McKinnon and assaulted him violently. For this he was fined $10 and costs, or two months’ imprisonment, and also to give two sureties of $100 each to keep the peace for twelve months,

Dear Str,—lI find, in referring to a copy of the Asylum specification, that the roofs are to be shingled with St. John No. 1 split pine shingles, laid in mortar, and 45 inches to the weather. How, then, does it come that a contract has been entered into with the Messrs, McKinnon, of Lot 9, to furnish the contractor of the Asylum with sawn cedar shingles. Now, itis well known that the quality of shingles specitied would cost at least six or seven dol- lars at St: John, besides the cost of importa- tion, which would be about 25 cents per thousand; while the sawn cedar will cost about $3.00 (delivered), or perhaps for extra No. 1 $3.25. So that taking into consideration the difference between the cost of the pine and cedar, I find that it would amount to about $3.50 per square; and as there area great many squares in the roofs, it would save a very large amount to the contractors. It may be that the difference of cost has been deducted from the contract price; if so, the Government organs will be able to inform.
qf am free to admit that McKinnon’s shingles are the best in the market, and can be recom- mended for either roofs or walls of buildings. But, since they do not cost near so much as St. John No. 1 pine, and as they are not in the specification, | would like to know whether the Government or the contractors are entitled to the d‘fference ot cost.
