The following is the text of the letter of the President of the United st ites to the American fishermen, of which an epitome has already been given
‘I sincerely trust the apprehension you express cf injustice and unfriendly treatment of American fishermen, lawfully found in Can- adian waters, will not be really sound, but if such apprehension should prove to be well founded I earnestly hope no fault or inconsid- erate action of any of our citizens will, in tne least, weaken the just position of ovr govern- ment, or deprive us of the universal sympathy and support to which we should he entitled. The action of this administration since June, 1885, when the fishery articles of the treaty of 1871 were terminated, under a_ notification which had two years before been given by our government, had been fully disclosed by cor- respondence hetween the representatives and appropriate depaitments of the respective gov- ernments, with which, I am apprised by your letter, you are entire y familiar. An exami- nation of this correspondence has doubtless satisfied you that in no case have the rights or privileges of American fishermen been over- looked or neglected, but that on the contrary they have been studiously insisted upon and cared for by every means within the control of the government. The act of Congress, ap- proved March 3, 1887, authorizing a course of retaliation through executive action, in the event of a continuance on the part of the British American authorities of unfriendly con- duct and treaty violations affecting American tishermen, has devolved upon the President of the United States exceedingly grave, and solemn responsibilities, comprehending highly important consequences to our national char- acter and dignity, and involving extremely valuable commercial intercourse between the British possessions of North America and the people of the United States. I understand that the main purpose of your letter is to sug- gest that in case recourse to retaliatory mea- sures authorized by this act should be invited by unjust treatment of our fishermen in future, the object of such retaliation might be fully accomplished by ‘‘ prohibiting Canadian caught fish from entry into ports of the United States.” The existing controversy is one in which two nations are the parties concerned. The retaliation contemplated by the act of Congress is to be enforced, not to protect solely any particular interest, however meri- torious or valuable, but to maintain the na- tional honor, and thus protect all our people. In this view, the violation of American fish- ing rights, and unjust or unfriendly acts to- wards that portion of our citizens engaged in this business, is but the occasion for action, and constitutes a national affront which gives birth to, or may justify, retalia- tion. This measure once resorted to, its effectiveness and value may well depend upon the thoroughness and extent of its application, and in the performance of international duties, the enforcement of international rights, and the protection of our citizens this govern- ment aud the people of the United States must act asa unit, all intent upon attaining the best result of retaliation upon a basis of the maintenance of national honor and duty. The nation seeking by any means to maintain its honor, dignity, and integrity, is engaged in protecting tke rights of its people, and if in in such efforts particular interests are injured and special advantages forfeited, these thing.

A Splendid Liemoustration. Monrreat, April 11,
Hon. Mr. Chapleau, Secretary of State, was tendered a banquet at the Windsor this evening by the Conservative Associa- tion of Montreal and many friends from all over the Dominion in tuken of the gallant and successful fight he made in this dis- trict during the elections. It was without exception the grandest political demonstra- tion ever held in Montreal. Eloquent ad- dresses were made by Sir Charles Tupper, Sir A. P. Caron, Langevin, White, Thomp- son and many local lights.
Fire at Wolfville.
Wotrvi1ig, N. 8., April 11.
The Sunday quiet of the little village was disturbed last evening by discovery that the old Male Academy, just back of the Acadia College, was on fire. The fire burnt very slowly, and had proper appliances been at hand it could have been subdued with slight damage, but by eleven o'clock the building was completely consumed, The building was insured for $2,500.
The Eagle's Arrival.

The sealing steamship Eagle arrived here to-day and reports that the debris and apparent wreckage with the ship’s name found on the ice were flung overboard to make room for seals. There is great rejoicing among sealers families over the arrival of the supposed lost vessel.
Bloody Riot.
Denver, Col., A pril 11.
A bloody riot occurred last night between rival Welch Polish and Hungarian colonies, which resulted in the fatal shooting of one Pole and the serious wounding of several others. Policemen armed with Winchester rifles quelled the disturbance and made about thirty arrests.
A Very Scrious Charge.

To-day Daniel Duley was brought before Police Magistrate Dibblee, under a very serious charge. Last fall John Lovely was found underneath the Florenceville bridge, fatally injurdd. Duley has been arrested on suspicion of having caused Lovely’s death.
Suffering Saivationists. (JvgeBEc, April 11. The Salvation Army were attacked again to-night while parading the streets, by rowdies. Some volunteers going to drill got mixed up in the crowd and drew their bayonets. One man was arrested.
