Mr. Gladstone’s Austrian Note.

A correspondent of the London Times who signs himself * Veritas,” and who seems to speak with tho weight of an official utterance, writes to that journal to rolats the manner in which the ex- planation between Count Karolyi and Mr. Gladstone was brought about, nene of the the current accounts being cor- rect. Jie states that two or three days before Mr. Gladstone became Premier, Count Karolyi, referring to his’ reden remarks on Austria, Was eomplaining of the embarrassing situation in which he sheuld be placed ov his first meeting with Mr. Gladstone. On April 23, the day on which Mr. Giadstone became Premie:, the gentleman to whom this complaint was addressed repoated it on his own responsibility to Mr. Gladstone, who expressed his deep regret that the remarks ia question should have given

ain, and authorized the communication of that regret to his Excellency, aecom- panied by, an assurance that words hastity uttered under a mistaken tins pression must not be regarded as indi eative of his future policy, nor even ol his general feelings lowards Austria, which were those of sympathy and re- spect. The day following, April 24th, Count Karolyi acknowledged this com- munication by aletter to the same entleman in which, accepting the af. fairs ag an electoral incident which might be regarded as ron avenr, he de- elares his readiness to take the first op- rtunity of cordially congratulating Mr. Gladstone on his accession to office. The explanution was then regarded as satisfactory and complete on both-sides and “ Veritas” aflirms that it was not the resultof any preemptory demand or threat of resignatien on the part of the Ambassador, whose tone was considers ate and conciliatory throughout. Nor did he ever attach to what he rightly eonsidered an unofficial utterance the exigg¢erated importance with which if has been invested by the assailants of the Government. The affair, alter being alfowed to rest tor some days, was re- opened from the neeessily, real or sup- posed, of making the explanation puab- lie in an official or diplomatic form. ~<a

and the ecclesiastical authorities in this city. ‘The mission, we are informed, has been eminently successful, and not only have this differences been arranged to the entire satisfaction of the Sisters,but the position of the Community has been definitely settled. The Mother Saperior will henceforth be styled tho Suporte General of the Order, a title recently claimed by the ecclesiastical head of this diocese. The Pope himself is now the actual head of the order, but such duties as are required to be performed here will be attended to by.a bishop, who is yet to be appointed. During all their stay in Rome the Sisters re- ceived from the ecclesiastical authori- lies the greatest kindness and attention, and just before leaving were favored by the Pope with a special audiénce.— Ax.
