An Election Sequel

The British Free Traders and British exporters have not been slow to take advantage of the defeat of Mr. BENNETT for the purpose of demanding a modification of the Ottawa agree- ments in favour of Great Britain. In the elec- tion now on one of the outstanding features is the agricultural policy 0f the Minister for Agri- culture, Mr. WALTER ELLIOTT, who demands adequate protection for the British farmer, and the eliminationiof free entries from the Doniin- ion. It is claimed that the Canadian election re- sult justifies the opponents of the Ottawa agree- ments, and that. there is no reason now why customs duty should not be levied on all agri- cultural imports, with merely a preference in favour of the Dominion, subject to a substantial quid pro qua. Of course the agreements are safe until 1937, but it seems fairly certain that the good work accomplished by Mr. BENNETT \vill be to a considerable extent undone when Mr. KING and Mr. Dumvmo start to make coiices- sions for the benefit of the British agricultur- ists and industrialists.

Preparing For Remembrance

The different organizations throughout the Empire are making adequate arrangements for the successful celebration of the Anniversary of Remembrance Day. There are reckless motorists who proceed in their dangerous methods, secure in the knowledge that if they cause injury to persons or property their insurance will carry them through. What is really needed is suppression of all careless or reckless drivers, and that is a problem that is worrying road authorities every- where. The only effective remedy seems to be constant vigilance on the part of police, specially at curves and other danger spots. It is a common experience, for example, to see motorists pm- cceding carefully where officers are‘ stationed at busy times, and -then taking risks where no officers are in sight. Theimpression given is that there are still quite a few drivers who need to be watched all the time. Of course, it is impossible to do this, but drastic corrective measures might be adopted whenever gross recklessness is proved. Perhaps the most effective cure is the con- fiscation of adriver’s license fora more or less lengthy peri0d-pernianently in the case of flag- rant or repeated violations of the common safety regulations. A more general adoption of such a policy would remove the worst offenders and the broads would be so much the safer for everyone.
