One English professor, angered at the departmental decision, said the emphasis of Bishop’s English depart- ment has traditionally been academic rather than pro- fessional.

“We think of ourselves as

ment,” the professor, who wished to remain unidenti- fied, said. “(But) there are a limited number of things we can do.”

The department’s division- al ‘chair said there was a greater need for effective writing and with the recent cutbacks “the highest prior- ity must go to the great- est need.”
