Federation at the Cape of Good Hope.
iu Cape Colony, says the London Post, the federation principle has become more popular since it was first mooted, whilst in the Orange River Free State it was from the outset accepted with favor. The in- habitants of tlie Republic have not been so well affected to it since the forcible annex- ation of the Transvaal justifiable as that measivo was, and since the occurrence of complications with the natives ; but the conclusion of peace, and the evident desire on our part to promote the prosperity of the Transvaal, will doubtless soon create as warin a fecling as ever, and the Free State will not be an obstacle to a step of such general benefit to South Africa. _Al- though for so.we months to come no leg s'a- tive action Gan be taken for forwarding con- federation, still during the recess of the Cape Parliament much may be done to- wards the proposed end. On the 25th Feb- ruary Sir Michael Hicks Beach suggested that aconferonce of delegates from the various South African Previnces should be held at Cape Town, and this might be very well carried out now, when the whole ques- tion could be calmly discussed, difficulties talked of, and remedies suggested, with a distinct plan of operations agreed upen ere another Parliament sitting at Cape Town can assume the initiative in actively taking the work in hand.

At Cape Canso twenty schooners are ashore and more or damaged. Several of them will prove total wrecks. Schooner ‘‘ Reliance” is a total wreck at Cross Harbor. At White Haven Harbor there are
thirteen shooners ashore, the names apd damages unknown. At Glas-
gow Harbor five schooners dragged their anchors and went ashore. At House Harbor *the ‘‘Sophia” is ashore. The steamer ‘“‘M. A. Starr” arrived at Canso yesterday from Halifax, and reports the whole coast strewn with wreckages. The captain took refuge from the gale in Kiscombe. He says he counted over sixty sail at White Head during the gale, and most of them must have gone ashore. So far as known yet, no lives were lost ; but it is feared that later reperts will not be so favorable.

King’s County Exhibition.
To the Editor of the Examiner.
Mr. Epiror:—You may think that the following remarks were written a day after the fair ; if so, you are right ; nevertheless they are not yet too late to appear in your popular and widespread journal. The King’s County Exhibition and Industrial Fair eclipsed everything that ever before appeared in Georgetown. The reception iven to Governor Haviland and suite, would do henor even to a Prince of the Blood Royal! The dais or platform on which His Honer presided was handsomely carpetted, and all around it were raised colors, banners, and other becoming decor- ations, as tokens of respect and rejoicing. In fact,§the Drill Shed had more the ap- pearance of a grand banquetting hall or a ball roem than that of a place where the industry, art and skill of our people were to be exhibited. The inhabitants of King’s County have much reason for congratulating themselves on having such a building as the Drill Shed for the use and accommedation of the County on grand public occasions. Nor were the arrange- ments and preparations made fer the con- venience of our farmers and their wives and daughters wanting or deficient in any respect or particular. Everything was as near perfection as possible. And although thousands were assembled as rivals for prizes in every kind of handiwork and of works of art and beauty, not a countenance could be seen that did not beam with the light of friendship and the joyous radiance of good humor and good will. Never did a happier throng congregate. For once, at least, did King’s County, and Georgetown its capital, do themselves high honor and And there is a good guar- antee that this is but one of many such happy events which will he enjoyed, in the future. Nor can it be otherwise, for the town is certainly situat- ed, and now enjoys an advantage and a convenience long prayed fer and looked for, viz : a good, commodious and trustworthy steamer to carry on a traffic with the South and the West. It has also the advantage of a railway running into its very centre. Mention should also be made of the ar- rangements contrived for the horses on Ex- hibition. This was a circular area enclosed by ropes, inside of which the noble animals were marshalled like so many war chargers, and around which a thousand and one spec- tators walked in all the ecstacy of excite- ment and delight. oe
The managers of the Exhibition de- serve the unfeigned thanks and g-atitude of the whole County, for the superior manner in which they performed their ardous duties, and Iam sure that the public will

make the Exhibition a success, and there
can be ne doubt that if they be spared until
another Exhibition takes place, they will
