A writer in the Morning Guardian of the 22nd, under the nom de plume of “Sunday,” says that “the injunction of Holy Scripture is plain,” and goes on to quote several verses of the Inspired Word in support of this statement. Now, Sir, I do not take issue with “Sunday” here. I fully agree witb him on this point, forthe Old Testament hurls anathema after anathema at the Sabbath breaker, but be it remembered that it is always the keeping holy of the seventh day that is enjoined and not the first, and there is not one word in the New Testament that authorizes its change, But grant for the sake of argument that

He said he had great pleasure in speaking before such an intelligent meeting, representing a portion of the elec torate which he was sure would play an important part in the contest of the next two months. He re. marked that there were good and bad men in every party. But since confederation we have always had in the Liberal-Conservative party the ablest men of both the old poll- tical parties of Canada, In regard to the development of Canada, we now produce every year about a billion dollars in nat- ural products and manufactured goods. This by a population of five ‘millions was a good showing on behalf of the party which had built our great railways and encouraged our home industries im the face of the continuous opposition of the Grit party. The Conservatives are the party of upity and progress, while the Grits are the party of opposition to every good work and the stirrers of religious and racial strife. He was glad to see so many young men enrolled under the ban ner of the Libera!l-Coneervatives, and hoped fora great triumph in the contest that is now impending.

Alex. Martin, Esa., the popular candi- date for East Queens, was next called up- on. He eaid that as Conservatives we had every reason to take pleasure in being allied to a party made up of men which any country would be proud of—such men as the late Sir John McDonald and Sir John Thompson, Sir McKenzie Bowell, Sir Charles Tupper and others. We have a Government which is consistent, and which made up Canada by ex‘ending, un ting and making it solid. Our oppon- ent’s record on the other hand, is one of obstruction and opposition to everything calculated to be of benetit to the country. They opposed the construction of our rail- ways, our cheese and dairy industries, and on the whole have arecord which no other party can show. On this account no young man should bind himself as a supporter of such a party. He referred to their different policier, and in Jocal matters to the promises of the grits previous to their coming into power, and their record since getting control of the affairs of the Island. The southern part of this island, for which he had the _ pleasure of being a candidate in the com- ing election, has been interested in railway extension to their part of the Island, but on account of sending mem- bers to Ottawa who are opposed to the Government there, their claims have been neglected, and not till within the last two vears has the matter been brought before the Dominion House. Recently the Govy- ernment generously proposed to provide $250,000 for the construction of brauch railways here; and our local Grit papers at once threw cold water on it.
