We are pleased to learn that a collection of paintings, consisting of oils, water colors and crayons, sent by Mra. W. W. irving to her sou in Washington Territory, were awarded a diploma at the Washington [Industrial Exhi- bition, on the 16th of October last. This is very creditable to Mvs, Irving, more particu- larly when it is knewn that in sending these paintings t» Washington she never intended that they should be placed on exhibition.

Any. —\\e were shown to-day at the Sales- room of Mr. W. D. Stewart,a largeand varied assortinen! of the paintings which are to be sold by auction on Wednesday next. They are superior to any assortment we have yet seen on the market here and consist of oil paintings from one of the best artists in the sity, brenze and white mounted chromos, oleograph, stc. Tur Tesrament Disownxep,—Early on Sun- day morning, a gentleman, on passing the drug store of Mr. C. D, Rankin, discovered a hoo lying on the door step. On examination, he found it to bea copy ot the New Testa- ment. Having one of these at home, and trusting that the one at Mr. Rankin’s would fall into the hands of one. of the many who require its teachings, he allowed it to remain on the step aud passed on. Late in the after- noon this yentleman again passed the way. ‘The book still remained on the step, but was how surrounded by a careless and ungodly crowd who, no doubt, ascertained the nature of the volurae’s contents with seeming indif- ierence tothem. The ‘Daily Telegraph” says that the Government contemplates proclaiming mar- tial law in the disturbed districts of Lreland. Porrsmourns, Dec. 17. The iron screw troopship ‘‘ Assistance,” which is about to undergo refitting, has been ordered to bein readiness to proceed within 12 hours notice on a special voyage to Ireland.

Beuce Jones, who has been made a victim of ‘' Boycotting,’”’ writes to the Times as follows: “lam getting some resolute men from a distance, well armed, to replace the laborers who have left. Two policemen sleep in the house, and four others are stationed near my farm. I have applied for more protection, and troops are promised me on Friday.”’

Mr. Hartland, a Conservative, was to- day declared to be a member of the House for Evesham. After the last general elec. tion Mr. Katelittfe, Liberal, was unseated on petition for bribery. Subsequently. Mr. Leharvan, Liberal, was elected py 378 votes against 376 votes for Mr. Dixon Hartland Mr. Hartland claimed the seat, with the result that Mr. Lehaman was unseated fer bribery. A sorutiny of the ballot resulted in the seating of Mr. Hartland.

A despatch from Cork to the 7''mes says : ‘‘There is a great want of employment throughout the eountry, owing to the dis- inclination of landlords to lay ont money. At several meetings held, farmers were summoned tu give employment to laborers. Che agent of the Earl of Cork was request-

The Times, in its leading article on the Irish question, this morning, says: ‘‘ The followers of the Government are embarras- sed, and for the most part do not know what to say, while afew ara boid enough to express their regret at the line their leaders have pursued.” Mr. Whitehead, one of the most reapected Liberais in the House of Commons, speaking at Bedford, last night, described vividly the reign of terror that had left no honest oalling safe in a large part of Ireland, and avowed his feel- ing that the time Had arrived when the Government might be compelled to use cvercion.” The writer then pro- ceeds : ‘** There have been Lib- eral Governments before the present Government, embarassed by Irish diiticul- ties ; but they have not been slack to do what they could to assert the authority of the law. Thecontrast between the spirit of those times and the spirit prevailing now is little to the credit of the Government or to that of the present generation. One of the worst evils consequent on the Governments attitude is the eifect it must have on the popular reception in Ireland of their reme- dial legislation. It should be received asa satisfaction of justice, but it is too probable that it will be received as a concession to the lawlessness with which the Government did not venture to grapple. If arbitrary de- mands are not granted in the form in which they have been made, it will still be said that what is given is the result of the de- monstration of the irresistible power of a people determined to have their own way. The most false“and foolish netions will be thus confired in the brain of the Irish peasant. ment thus threatens us with a recurrence of difficulties in the future, for their conduct, will encourage a- repetition of the tactics with which they have not ventured to grapple.”
