Two generations ago. the ener- ries of many were being expend- mi in forming groups and organi- niip activities which were divisive ill i-liarscter. intended to ”prolect". the imagined rights of a racial or

religious group by the suppres- sion or limitation of the rights of other groups.

Now. in increasing numben. Cn- nadians are joining to investigate ways in which such destructive forces as "anti Semitism." "antl- Catholicism." and "anti-Protestan- tantism" can be rooted out of our common way of life. While admit- ting and respecting the differenc- es among races and nationalities and religious convictions. we are struggling now to find areas in which we can co-operate. and to uproot. once and for all. the ir- rational prejudices which can threaten a multl - racial society such as ours.

Unfortunately. however. it can happen that what we heartily ap- prove and support on a social or organizational. level we refuse to practise on a personal level. Yet it is not as organizaions or clubs lint we contact members of nut- ionalities. races or crceds other

than our own: it is as persons. in- dividuals. it is not as organizati- ions that we acquire an emotional attitude. bias. or prejudice against the new Canadian. or Jew or Cath- olic or Protestant; it is as persons. GUIDED BY CHARITY

And as persons we must train ourselves to judge others. not on Ithe basis of emotional reactions iconditioned by our own sometim- es narrow and bigoted environ- ment. We must make our judg- ments. guided by the virtues of absolute justice and generous and understanding charity.

This is not easy for most of us. All, to some extent at least, have been conditioned by antipnthies to members of a race. nationality. or creed. antipathies festering sometimes for generations. But as we mature as persons and as a nation we must acquire the habits of honesty of thought in suppres- sing those irrational prejudices.

The home is the training ground of virtue. and this is especially true in the development of the virtues of good citizenship. the growth of respect for and tolera- tion-in the best sense-of the members of other races and re- ligions. And this training in Jus-

We have be obligation. in our gratitude. by an awareness of these virtues of justice and char- ity, to make these laws a living expression of our own personal at- titude. and to gude our children to maturity. free from the blight of racial or religious intolerance. VANCOUVER (CPI .. Alberta crude oil exports lrom this port have dwindled to a trickle since the end of the Suez Canal crisis.

The oil movement reached a peak during the crisis. but in the last couple of months only five tankers have loaded here. The slump is expected to continue to September with only one tanker scheduled to load for Japan mean- while.

United States Pacific ports be- gun to stockpile Alberta crude during the canal closure and now they have enough on hand for neveral Inonths' requiremetfts.

Furthermore. shipments of crude from Kuwait in the Persian Gulf are arriving in large volume at California refineries.

Reopening of the canal caused an immediate slump in tanker charter rates. so it is once again profitable to ship oil all the way from the Persian Gulf to U.S. ports in super-tankers on long- term charter.

Kuwait oil can thus be delivered to refineries cheaper than Alberta oil despite the much longer haul
