Poundmaker in Captivity. MR. JAMES TROW, M. P., VISITS THE CHIEF IN PRISON.
Mr. James Trow, M. P., for South Perth, who is writing for the Stratford Beacon a series of letters on a recent visit to the Northwest, gives the follow- ing account of a talk with Poundmaker at his quarters in the Stony Mountain Penitentiary :—
“Passing along the lawa we noticed quite a namber of Indians and other prisoners marching past under com- mand of their guards to their work at anew building. The Indian prisoners were dressed in prison suits, giving them a more respectable appearance than when clad in a dirty blanket with gew-gaws, psinted faces, and eagle's wings. Someofthem looked gloomy, others more cheerful. The Indian has adecided dislike to the wearing of pantaloons. On one occasion Dr. Hagarty, then Indian medical adviser for the Northwest, and myself, decorat- ed a young chief at Fort Ellice, with a new Government suit. He evidently folt uncomfortable,sighed for ‘freedom,’ and while we were exploring the Fort the rascaliy redskin cut the seat out of his pants! We were taken into the garden containing several acres under excellent cultivation, and laid off into well formed beds containing almost every description of vegetuble and flower known in the East. Engaged in the undignified work of

Ascer- taining that it was not against the rules of the institution to hold a conversa- tion with the fallen chief, or make him a present of a few cigars, I gave him some, which he accepted with evident pleasure. This I considered a necessary preliminary to engaging ia a general conversation: I need sot weary your readers by rehearsing the tenor of our confab. Suffice it to say Poundmaker nodded, we did the same; he said ‘ho! we said ‘ho! This concluded our inter- esting interview. Probably the Cree chief was out of temper that we did not understand Cree, and we were disap- pointed that he didn’t understand Eng- lish or Welsh, or even Gaelic. His figure is well formed, slender, and tal! ; his features are good—nothing wicked or villainous in his coustenance. He is very fond of EXHIBITING HIS LONG HAIR,
which reaches to the small of his back- He was very much annoyed on entering the penitentiary when he was informed his hair would be cut short,and earnest- ly craved the influence of Governor Dewdney and Mr. Bedson to intercede with Sir John in bis behalf, that his silky locks should be spared, saying he would sooner loose his life. This privi- lege was granted. Most likely the poor fallen chief was not as bad as represent- ed, and that he could not, as alleged, control his braves when attacked by Col. Otter. In all probability he will be set at liberty before his sentence ex- pires. Ifbe isa judge of comfort he will remain not merely for the term of his sentence but during his natural life.” Strange Friendships.
The painter Razzi formed friendships with alisortsof animals, and he filled his house with squirrels, mockies, Angora cats, dwarf asses, he-goats, and Elba ponies.
Besides these he had an enormous raven, whogravely strode about among the other animals asif itwere the ex- hibitor of this Noah’s Ark. When any one knocked at the outer door, the raven called, “Come in!” in a loud voice.
Pelisson, confined in the Bastile,made a friend of a spider, which he tamed. The jailer one day seeing Pelisson take pleasure in contemplating the insect, crushed it under his foot, and left the prisoner distressed and melancholy at the loss of his friend.
Latude, inthe same prison, made companions of some six and twenty rats, who inhabited his cell. He gave each of them a name, and they learned to come to him at his call. He fed them, played with them, and they thus great- ly relieved the ennui of his captivity. But Latude made friends of rats only from necessity.
The Mirquis de Montespan, ia per- fect freedom of choice, had the extra- ordinary taste to amuse himself with mice,when occuppying the gilded apart- ments of Versaiiles. True, the mice were white, and had been brought to him all the way from Siberia; but the taste was a most odd one, veverthe— less.
Cardinal Mazarin, the French Mip- ister, employed his leisure in playing with an ape; and Cardinal Richelieu amused himself with his collection of cats,
