On March 16, 1990, the UPEI Senate formally replace the Senate Extension Committee with the new Committee on Continuing Education. Terms of

Reference, Reporting Procedures and Composition are as follows:

Terms of Reference:

1. Regularly, to review the existing policies and programs relative to the function of the University as an agent of continuing education, including extension and summer session course offerings, part- time study, teaching and research institutes and community development;

2. To report to Senate the results of reviews carried out under (1) and, as appropriate, to make policy and program recommendations to Senate;

3. To advise the Director responsible for continuing education on initiatives, within approved program, relative to the continuing education function of the University.

Reporting procedure: The committee will report to Senate as needed with an annual report to be submitted in November Composition:

1 faculty member or the Dean or a coordinator of Continuing Education named by each faculty/school. 1 member of the MAPUS executive named by the executive :

1 part-time student

1 full-time mature student

1 part-time faculty member

From MAPUS’ point of view the reformed committee on continuing education reflects an increasing awareness of the needs of life-long learners and a renewed commitment on the part of Senate to facilitate the continuing Education process. Currently, the embodiment of life-long

learning at UPEI, mature fulltime and part-time students make up approximately 40% of the student population. The adoption of reporting procedures (new for this committee) simply underlines, in principle, senate’s willingness to responde to changes in student’s needs. In selecting members from all faculties/schools involved in the delivery of courses and programs Senate provides, at the very least, a framework for communication between non- traditional students, faculties/schools, the Director responsible for continuing education and Senate. Ultimately in its policy review, policy initiating and advisory functions it can serve as a powerful force towards the provision of equal opportunity for all students.
