Tux rumor is considered correct that Mr. Bentley, the brasilian Conaul General, hither- to residing at San Francisco, has been trans- ferred by the [imperor to Canada, and he will reside at Montreal. This step has been taken in view of the closer relations between the two countries.

Qveen’s County Exurerrion.—The Managers of the Exhibition, after paying all expenses, including the Secretary’s al- lowance, have on hand the sum of seventy dollars, which they have appropriated towards a grain show to be held at next Easter Market,—particulars of which will be advertised in due time.

A Rovat ComMisston, composed of the Earl of Carnarvon, the Right Hon. Mr. Childers, Sir Henry Holland, Sir Alexander Milne, Sir J. Simmonds, Sir Henry Barkley, Thomas Brassey, R. G. Hamilton, with Captain Her- bert and J. E. Kyle as Secretary, has been ap- pointed to examine into and report en the best means of defending and protecting the colonies and the commercitl navy.

Mer Youmans’ concert in the Athenwum, on Monday evening, promises to-be a suc- cess. Mr. Y.’s principal remuneration for teaching is the proceeds of his concerts, and as he is really doing a good work among our children, we trust that he may receive the patronage Cue to merit, and that other meetings wil! not be announced to detract from the interest which properly belongs to his entertainment.

Lonpon has been startled by the news that Prince Bismarck has written Earl Beacons- field to say that he will visit him in the sum- mer of 1880. The invitation is of old stand- ing. having been given during the sittings of the Berlin Conference at the Radizvil Palace. Bismarck was absent from two of t!:2 sittings, and on learning the ailment, Lord Beacons- field said that Buxton’s Spring was a specific. Bismarck suffers from a strange complication of disorders, aggravated by his enormeus con- sumption of tobacco and his proportionate use of beer, not tie light Bavarian, but the heavy beer brewed en his own estate.

Tae musical and literary entertainment held in the basement of the Methodist

of the Prince Street Sabbath School, was in every respect a grand success. The at- tendance was very large, while the singing and recitations$hy the children were re- markably fine. At the close of the enter- tainment, Miss Emma Barr, one of the teachers, was presented with a handsome gold watch and chain by the pupils of the Sabbath School.

Propucz Exports.—On the 22nd inst., the schr. Tiger cleared from Souris for St. Johns, N’fid with a cargo consisting of 19,858 pounds of beef,565 do pork, 3,351 do mutton, 70 geese, 3,391 bushels of potatoes, 1,800 bushels oats, and 30 tubs butter, valued at 2,805, and shipped by John A. McLaine. Onthe 24th inst., the sehr. James Dwyre cleared from Georgetown for Halifax with 1,500 bushels of potatoes, and 4,000 bushels of oats, shipped by O. Connolly. On the 23rd inst., the schr. a R Stewart cleared from Souris for Halifax with 2,150 bushels oats and 250 do barley, shipped by Matthew MeLean & Co ; and on the 20th inst., the schr. Sea Gull cleared from Souris for Halifax with 1850 bushels oats, shipped by C. McWade.

Parrick Dunn and John Larter appeared at the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court on Saturday forenoon, charged with stealing articles from the sleigh of Mr. Robert Rogerson on the evening of the 23rd inst. The evidence adduced was not sufficient to convict either and they were discharged. Reuben Stephenson, who was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, on Friday, for

stealing two coats and a pair of pants from |

the Commercial House, was granted a second hearing. He produced a witness who proved that on the morning after he took the clothes from the Hotel, he went to the house of Elizabeth Pilly, said he had been drunk on the previous night, and that he was afraid he would get into trouble as he had Mr. (iillis’ clothes on. Mr. Gillis, on oath, said he believed that Stephens n was drunk when he took them and that he did not know what he was doing. The Magistrate discharged the priscner.

A despatch from Lahore on Friday night

A Paris despatch reports that all the newspapersrecommend a Gambetta Cabinet.

Advices from Valparaiso on the 3rd are as follows: “‘Iquique has been opened to commerce, the only restriction being in re spect of arms and ammunition. The Presi- dent of Peru is marching upon Lima, ex- pecting the Chilians to attack Callao and the Capital. It is reported that the Boli- vians have sacked Tacna, Peru, and threat- ened Aric.
