I would like to take this oppurtunity to address the important issue of the UPEI Womens Committee. AS most People know, this committee met last wednesday to address the issues of sexual assualt, harassment,and~
_discrimination on the UPEI
Campus.
I would like to stress that these issues are not only on the campus of UPEI
but on other campuses across
the nation. I would like to add that this is not a phenomenon of university life, but these issues come to light because there has been a tendancy for
university students to react
to these issues and plan preventative measures. This is exactly what the UPEI Womens Committee was attempting to do. It is
‘very ounfortunate that the media caught wind of their meeting and took a touchy
,subject at the best of times
and blew it proportion.

I sincerly hope that this type of publicity will not have a detrimental effect on the aims of the Womens group for they deeperately need the support of students, staff, and faculty on campus.

As a result of the UPEI
.Women’s Committee meeting held son Wednesday, Sept. 28, the" need ‘ for the
immediate organization of a buddy system on campus was recognized. The response to this idea was overwhelmingly in favour. Approximately 80 peOple attended the meeting and the majority of those present

demonstrated thato
would indeed take advantage of a buddy system.
The Women's Committee intends to set up a system on a tentative basis until proper screening procedures for volunteers can be installed. Any males or females interested in escorting females around the University at night between the various buildings and parking lots, please leave your name and phone number, where you can be reached at
the Student Union. If yOu know when you will be available for assistance
then please a leave this information as well.
All that is required is
that you know you will be on campus for a certain
of time, in a particular place and do not mind being
interrupted to walk with someone to their. room or car.
We anticipate a heavy demand for this service so please consider leaving you name as a volunteer. If any females wish to* volunteer, they may do so in groups of
two or more. Individual females volunteers will be buddied up with another
female volunteer. Thank you

This letter is being written to express ~my concern over last week's incident.
What began as a women's
organization on campus trying to inform the students of issues facing
women has now turned into a very contraversial incedent. The reason why this issue has been blown out of proportion is because people have overreacted.
_ Out of the events' that have taken place another issue has turned up that is a’ little closer to home, that is the apparent lack of communication between administration, faculty, and the students.

The students on campus make up approximatly 90% of the total University population with roughly A00 new freshmen a year. This represents an abundance of new thoughts, concerns, and ideas. In an institution where students ‘ are encouraged to express dougt and form their own ideas and opinions I find it a shame that this communication gap is so prevalent. As already shown, this lack of listening can have effects on everyone.
In closing I would like to stress the importance of listening. We are not a campus made up of students and the other peOple. We are a University as a whole.
It is for this reason we should strive for greater co-operation among the various components of the University.
Out of this issue I hope everyone has at least learned this one very
important lesson.
