Later experiments, have shown that firming the soil about the seeds or roots is the most important part of the work of planting or trans— planting, provided the soil 1s in proper condition previously.

It is not likely that we will go back to the custom of letting colts run in open sheds and lie in their own filth until their sides are coated and check- ed off by vracks where their bodies have to bend like theskin of an aligator, for the purpose of ‘toughening’ them, but there will be less effort made to exclude cold air when the pure article cannot be provided in any other conditicn. On this subject the Practical Farmer expresses ideas which are worth considering by our dairy- men :

The great trouble that has been exye rienced of late years from tuberculosis in cattle North leads us toask whether the practice of close housing of cattle in artificially-heated quarters with warmed water has not had a great deal to do with the constitutional weakness that invites disease. Then, too, the crowding of animals into close quarters in winter, with little or noffresh air, cer- tainly tends to the spread of disease from infected animals. Are we not in danger of going too tar in this matter of protection? We are continually told

in the raising of young cattle may rot even this be a disadvantage? We all know that the capacity of the milchcow to produce milk comes from her capa— city to consume food, and when we are raising a young animal we want it ge capacity to consume food

We really are beginning to think that in many cases the housing and protection of cattle is being carried to too great an extent for the stamin of the race, and that it may pay during the young life of an animal to expose it rather more and thus compel it to eat more. A well fed animal will withstand a great deal of cold, and if kept dry by shelter from rain and sleet storms may be better off than if closely housed. The
