The Other Side of the Question.
WHAT 4 PRESBYTERIAN DIVINE SAYS ABOUT HOME RULE AND RULERS.
A celebrated Presbyterian divine, Rey. Pr. Hanna, has been writing a series of letters to a friend in Scotland on ** Scot- land, Ulster and Home Rule for lreland.” In the course of one of them he says: ‘1 give you the fullest credit for conscientious convictions on the Irish ** Rome Rule” question. Iam quite sure you mean well, aud are fully persuaded that your political action and influence are best serving le land and the empire and the cause of God. It is the duty of Christian people in these lands to do the best they can for all parts of the United Kingdom, and I have the strongest assurance that you are acting up to your sense of duty in espousing the Gladstone policy for Ireland. On the other hand, I as strongly believe that Mr. Gladstone had made a fatal mistake, and that thousands of excellent men who have adopted his views are following by mistake a mistaken political ieader. When I quoted to you the unanimous con demnation of Mr. Gladstone’s scheme by the ‘‘ General Assembly of the Presbyter- ian Church in Ireland,” you replied to me by saying, ‘‘ Oh ! they are all Orangemen and Tories.” But is it not possible that Orangemen and Tories on this question may be right ‘ They occupy precisely the position that Mr. Gladstone himself did two years ago. The ‘‘ Orangemen and Tories” of Ireland were strongly with Mr. Gladstone while he opposed the demand for Home Rule, and endeavured to restore law and order in Lreland, as against the turbu- lence and atrocity promoted by the Land League. The ‘** Orangemen and Tories” have faithfully adhered to the position Mr. Gladstone has abandoned. The ex-Premier’s political and ethical evolutions have been too rapid and perplexing for a_ less but possibly sounder intelli- gence. The gift is not to every man to declare that the difference be- tween forty Parnellite votes in one Par- liament and eighty-six in another is the difference between flagrant iniquity and exalted righteousness, and may transform even ** forty thieves’ intoa decent com- ponent party for four-score-and-six politi- cal saints? Orangemen and Tories in Ire- land are not able to adopt that article in Mr. Gladstone’s political creed. And the amazement here is that any Scotchmen should be able to accept it as an orthodox edition to their ‘* Confession of Faith.” Permit me to call your attention to some facts greatly to the credit of some maligned body of men. No Orangeman in Ireland for half a century has been guilty of a capital offence, while the public executioner i1 Mr. Parnell’s dominions has been in almost constant employment, and in some parts of the delectable domain his salary has been a sensible addition to the county rates. Orangemen are hated and belied by the Parnellites because that loyal and chivalrous body is aa invincible barrier to the schemes of rebel and seditious Ireland. When have Orangemen given themselves to midnight marauding, to maiming the brute creation to punish their owners, or to the savage cruelty of invading peaceful habita- tions, and riddling with shot the limbs of the inmates / Iam not an Orangeman or a STory, but the interests of truth require me to protest against the deliberate false- hood and bitter malignity of the Parnell- ites, by which the Orangemen have been assailed. ‘his is the Parnellite policy ap- plied to ‘** Dublin Castle,” and to every rank and condition of Irish Loyalists, to discredit them with the British people, and secure for themselves the government of Ireland. And the sons of Belfast exult in their success, and secretly chuckle at the credulity of the saints who believe them ! But you will be-pleased, I am sure, to be put right in regard to the politics of the Irish General Assembly, and thw conse- quent value of its testimony on the Home
ule question. The General Assembly is not a body composed of ‘* Orangemen and Tories.” There are but three Orangemen known to me among the clerical members of the Assembly. I do not believe there is a fourth. There are not more than adozen Conservatives among the 550 members in the Assembly. The Irish General Assembly has been one of the most Liberal bodies in the United Kingdom. Many of its mem- bers are advanced Liberals, standing on the outmost lines of ** progress,” as some, in- deed, may think, touching the fringe of
