Orexsep. — The Gymnasium opened for work last evening with a very fair attendance of members and spectators, the latter at several times showing their surprise at the activity displayed by sore boys in tights. The “gym” is large and coratortable, the walls having recently been tinted and wood- work repainted. The different apparatus’ are laced in good position and are firmly erected. When the building has been lighted by electricity, which is the intention of the managers, we think it safe to say that there will not be «a better gymnasium in the Maritime Provinces.
Lecrvure.—Oa Monday evening next, 18th inst., Very Rev. Mgr. D. J. Gillis, of Iodian River, will lecture in St. Patrick’s Hall, in aii of the League of the Cross. The Very Rev Monsignor has been very happy in tbe choice of his subject: ‘A trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back.” He made the trip a few years »go in company with the late Bishop McIntyre, going by the Canadian Pacific to Vancouver, B. C., thence to Cali- fornia and Oregon by a Pacific steamer, and then back acrosa the contisent by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The returns from Richelieu show that the grit candidate is elected by about a hundred majority. The employes of the Richelieu Navigation Company, controlled i by Thomas McGreevy and Connolly, voted solid for the grit candidates. This shows that the government has the solid opposition of all the boodlers.

At a meeting of the corporation of Dublia it was proposed to adopt an adcéress of con | gratulation upon the approaching marriage of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale and the Princess Victoria Mary of Teck. Forty-five members were present and voted on question. Thirty-seven voted again:t the proposition, eight voted in its favor.

The following brief report of the Synod of Persia and Kurdistan will be read with more than ordinary interest. The meeting was held at Seir in the first week of Nov- ember. Seir is not ‘‘ Mount Seir” of the Bible, but the favorite summer resort of the missionaries. Dr. Shedd, the leading missionary in the field, writes: Tuesday evening and part of Wednesday were spent In reviewing the work in over eighty con- gregations and a wide missionary area beyond. There was much to encourage in the labors of the year, and some things to discourage, such as cases of discipline and divisions. The presence of the Spirit had been felt in many places, and the additions have been more than usual. The routine business was all of a practical kind. The mountain Presbytery, or Knooshya, was divided, so that now there are five small presbyteries composing the Synod. The missionary work and educational work called for discussion and careful planning for the future. A church directory of wor- ship was considered, and the large com- mittee having it in charge eontinued. Steps were taken to secure a delegate to attend the General Presbyterian Alliance, to meet in Toronto.

The Countess Tolstoi has communicated with American and English people in such a way that it will be possible for them to send aid to the starving Russians with the know ledge that the gifts will reach those for whom they are intended. The Society of American Friends of Russian Freedom has undertaken to receive American contributions for the famine sufferers, and ail sums sent to the treasurer of the society, Mr... Francis J. Garrison, 4 Park Street, Boston, will be promptly acknowledged and forwarded to the Countess Tolstoi. The Tolstoi family are all engaged in the work of relieving the starving people. Upto this time the difficulty h.s been that the Russian Government would not aliow charity to be distributed except by the Government officials; and popular distrust of these officials has checked the flow of contri- butions. It is understood, however, that the Government will not interfere with the work of the Tolstois,
