M. P. Ryay, Collector of Customs at Montreal, and Commissioner Johnson, of Ottawa, have been in consultation relative to the late seizure of custom goods. It seems that an amicable settlement has been arrived at by all concerned and that measures will be taken to prevent, if possible, a recurrence of these infringements of the law.

Cusroms.—The receipts at the Toronto Costom Honse on the first instant were the largest in the history of the port, amounting t» $37,452.83. The customs receipts at Montreal the past month amounted to $998,490.40, an increase of $205,616.37 ever July, 1851. ‘The receipts of Ang. 1 alone were $47,574 25. The value of the imports into the port of New York last week exceeded the exports by $3,112,000. The excess of imports for the same week last year was $426,000.

Crapaud Notes.

There has been considerable excitement of late in this vicinity. A bear was seen, first near Stordy’s Mills, then in a field near the residence of Mr. Thomas Rogerson. Two little girls who were berry picking in the field ran home crying, and stated that they had seen bruin. The nexi place he put in an appearance was in asmall grove near the Parsonage. Some parties were here berry picking, and observing some- thing strange in the grove gave the alarm. The people turned out en masse, armed with pitchforks, pistols, guns, and other articles of war too numerous to mention, to capture poor bruin, but they did not succeed, and he is still at large. The matter has been seriously talked over, and the general opi- nion is, that it was not a bear, but a black CcoW.

Tea Parties and Picnics are the order of the day here at present. Some twenty-five carriages, laden with the beauty and fashion

After having done ample justice to the good things pro vided, some wended their way to the shore, others to the factory, to tip the dight fantas- tic toe. Leaving at five o'clock, they re- turned safely hume at eight. All satisfied with the day’s pleasure.

The tea party held at Victoria on Friday last, was a grand success—the sum realized being $350. It was remarked by all that the eatables were first-class, and the ladies deserve credit as they had a short time to prepare. The afternvon was all that could be desired. The beautiful breeze from the harbor gave thuse who looked downcast, new hfe, vigor and action.
