News From Halifax. Haurrax, April 20, | Mr A. B, Sheraton, for a syndicate, has purchased all the contents of the St. Julian Hotel from the holder of the bill of sale. The steamer Harlow which arrived from Cape Breton yesterday reports having been jammed in Cow Bay from the llth to the 47th inst., by ice, and also was unable to get into South Sydney because of ice. The steamer St. Pierre, which arrived to- inight from Miquelon, reports immense /quantities of ice everywhere. The captain ) Says that he never in his life saw so much ice at this time of the year, and that he had to go further south than ever before to clear it The steamer was twenty-four hours fighting in it. The Cape Breton coast is entirely blocked. | The steamer Volunteer, from Newfound- land to-day, also encountered much ice, | passing through twenty-five miles of slab. The steamer Circassian with weekly mails | arrived from Liverpool at midnight to-night. | H. M.S. Pelican arrived in port yester- day, from Bermuda. ‘This is ker first visit jto this port. Opening of the Baseball Season.

Boston, April 19.

The championship baseball sesson was topened to-day, under the most favorable auspices, particularly in this city. In all | the cities the weather was fine, and con- | sidering everything, the games in all cases were good. Over ten thousand enthusiasts witnessed the opening of the Brotherhvod } championship series in this city to-day, and saw the first game played under the most favorable circumstances between the home nine andthe Brooklyns. The game was ‘one of which both cities had reason to be proud, and was closely contested from start to finish. Kelly and his men got a great reception. The Bostons won with a score of 15 to 9. At the South End Grounds, lthe crowd was comparatively small, but en- i thusiasvic. The Bostons beat the Breoklyns. Score 8to 2,

Seal Catch —-Men Missing. Norra Sypney, April 20.

The schr. Sphynx, belonging to Bay St. George, arrived here yesterday from the ice with 372 seals on board. She reports that the other day two boats were out with two men each. One boat got back to the vessel, but the other boat with Joseph Canda!l and Peter Bellows belonging to the channel was unable to fetch back and drifted to windward. The schooner tried to fetch to windward for 24 hours, but was unable, and fired guns continually.

A Deserving Punishment. Toronto, April 19,

Chas. H. Whiting, convicted of indecent- ly assaulting his niece, a little girl 11 years old, was sentenced to 23 months imprison- ment and 25 lashes with thecat. He re- ceived the latter punishment to-day. He screamed loudly at each stroke of the cat. No blood was drawn. Whiting has but one month to serve

Haven't Purcauasep Yet.—The owners of the breweries in Halifax who have been ne- gotiating with an Evglish syndicate with a view of selling out, have received that the syndicate have not yet decided to co npiete the purchase, and an extention of time is wked for. Itis probable that the negotiations will fall through.

isLAND Horses.—Mr. D. McKenzie, of Charlottetown Royalty, made a shipment of five horees this morning for the foreign mar- ket. Mr. MeKenzie, who went in charge of them, expects to be back again about the Ist of May. when he wili buy up another lot for thesame market, Parties who have any good hoi ses to dispose of will do well to give Mr. McKenzie a call on his return.

Pouce Covurt.—The first fine of the season tor a cow at large on the streets was inflicted to-day, viz : $5 and costs. The Mayistrate intimated that, as bumerous complaints had been to him of cows at L.rge destroying g«rdeus and lawns, he would this spring inflict such fines as would « ffectually put a stup to this nuisance. One druok was fined $3 or 14 days.
