The two-way trade between Brit- ain and Canada has increased en- ormously since the intra-Emplre agreements became effective. It is true that the‘ balance of trade re- mains in Canada's favor, but this condition has existed for many de- cades, and for reasons no tarifl changes could greatly alter. One is that Britain buys upwards of $100,- 000,000 worth of wheat from Can- ada. Another is that Canadian fac- tories, mills. mines and industrial establishments produce for home consumption a very large range of the commodities which constitute the bulk of Great Britain's exports. Still another is the proximity of the United States, one of Britain's greatest rivals in the production and sale of almost every line of ex- portable commodities.

And just here, notes the Post Record, the remarkable inconsist- ency of these journalistic critics of the Ottawa agreements covers their trade theories with confusion. The London Advertiser, for instance, is almost daily linking its criticisms 01' the AHBIO-Ocnadisn agreement with insistent demands for a recip- rocal lowering of tariffs between Canada and the United States. If these demands were met, what would be the result? Our purchases from the United States, alreacw mail? 1n excess of our sales to that country, would automatically in- crease, to the prejudice of British exporters in the Canadian market.

The Most Distinguished Order of st. Michael and st. George which has been conferred upon Dr. Claranoe Webster, Shediac, was created in 1818, a hundred years before the 03.12. Its ribbon is Saxon blue, with scarlet centre, and its motto "Ausplcium meliore aevi."

The Most Distinguished Order of the British Empire to which Mayor Kennedy has been admitted on Monday, was instituted in i911; its insignia, for ordinary members is a purple ribbon worn across the breast. It is conferred for service rendered to the Empire, whether at home or abroad, open to both men and women. Its motto is “For God and the Empire.“

Montreal City Council does not know its own mind on the principal question at issue-unemployment relief. On Friday last it refused to vote a million or so dollars for Jan- uary cheques, maintaining that the Dominion and Provincial Govern- ments should foot the bill. when the Mayor annourfied he would have to be prepared to read the Riot Act on New Year's Day, a special meet- ing of the Council on Monday speedily reversed its former decision.

According to estimates issued by A. E. Ames and 00., Limited, the amount of Canadian bonds matur- ing in 1936 will be about 30 per oent less than in 1934. Total issuse mat- uring in 1934 were $415,818,967, while the expected maturities in 1096 amount in $291,162,011, exclus- ive of possible redemption of 0137,- 000941 of Dominion of Canada 8% per cent. stock, due July 1, 1034-60. callable at pcrin Iondon, and 947,- 519,000 of ‘I per cent. Dominion of Canada guaranteed railway bonds due 1940, but callable at 1w l-I per cent in New York. The new Yugoslavia cabinet does not promise to be a strong one. This, however, is probably inten- tional. Prince Paul evidently means to try a new line. King Alexander was invited to suspend the consti- tution and rule as an absolute mon- arch. and this he did with a force- ful body 0f advisers. Possibly they were too forceful; but it must be remembered that when this hap- pened democratic government had failed to bring peace and order. Now. the prince regent seemingly intends to relax a little and give democ- racy another chance after the les- son it has had.

“The time has come, President Roosevelt says, "to take the profit out of war." This proposal is at least fifteen years old. The army and navy for some time has had plans for the complete mobilization of the "five M's—men, money, maintenance of food, munitionsand morale." The really important part of the plan from the military point of view does not relate to proiiteer- ing and the disparity of eamings between civilians and service men in wartime, but to the fact that the plan, if properly carried out, would make the United States im- pregnable to any enemy or any set. of enemies for a. very long period.

Mrs. Elizabeth Gregory, 48-year- old hospital char-woman, died of “housemaids knee," according to a report of a coroner's inquest. Death from such an ailment is “extreme- ly rare—alm0st unheard of." Great credit is due to the League of Nations for succesfully chang- ing the face of a situation whizh last week-end locked alarmingly ominous. It did this not by any spectacular coup or romantic ges- ture, but by informed and patient negotiations. The League provided the machinery for such negctla- tions, and happily its personnel proved equal to a dangerous task. Before the war, the Yugoslav-Hun- garian dispute would have been left to militaristic blusterers and dem- agogues, aided by diplomatists who work in the dark. That is precise- ly what happened in 1914 in the case of c. dispute with alarming parallels to the one now settled. ‘The great advantage which the world enjoyed was to know what was going on during Lie critical hours. In 1914, nobody knew until hell was suddenly let loose. The league stands for "open covenants openly arrived at." And that for- mula. succeeded. Today, the league ‘appears to better advlntage than even-Ottawa Citizen.

As the years pass the United [States despite itself, is growing away from the lone furrow isola- tion policy and is being drawn closer in with the rest of the world. It is not without the bounds of possibil- ity that before another ycar has passed the United States may adhere to the World Court. “I have said of the World Court on a pre- vious occasion, and I now repeat," says the American Attorney Gen- eral, "that in the fullness of time, it is destined to become the most useful, the most majestic judicial tribunal in all the history of the human race."

It la five years since the arms em- bargo was lifted. A steady stream of automatic arms has been flow~ ing into China. If piracy still exists, and it does to a very serious extent, then the authorities are unable to cope with the situation. That is. they do not govern. The piracy problem is the most simple military problem that they have to deal with. If they cannot settle prob- lems of much greater national im- portance to them-the defence of their country. The embargo on arms might as well be replaced if it is to serve no purpose. The sooner the authorities _both in Nani-ling and Canton realise that it is a ques- tion of tMir face, the quicker will they deal with an evil which pre- sents but little difficulty. It is need- less to make excuses that the pir- ates run to places like Hung Kong, Macao or the Shanghai concessions. if they cannot deal with the mat- ter themselves, why do they not ask for co-operatlon? It is doubt- ful if the piracy evil will be sup- pressed until the Chinese cll-oper- ate with the British navy-Hang Kong Press.

The cost adds only about one-quar- ter or one-fifth more to the charge for the X ray of the stomach and intestine.

A gall bladder that is not doinl its work properly may cause symp- toms that aflect the stomach and intestine, without 1t being sus- pected.

The examination of the gall blad- der is simple. A dye is taken by the mouth or injected into a vein and this dye outlines the shape and position of the gall bladder under

the X ray.

If the gall bladder doesn't fill completely it shows tin 96 Per cent of the cases) that something is wrong with the gall bladder-stones or other condition. ‘

A good gall bladder shadow which is normal in shape, size, and posi- tion with an even icutline and the right thickness, which empties it- self and contracts after a meal to a much smaller size, usually means a normal gall bladder.

A very practical and helpful point ls obtained by the dye test and X ray in ‘those who have no particular sharp pains 85 l“ 8511 stones, but feel heavy, tired, dis- couraged, with lack of ambition. The test in these cass shows that while the gall bladder has the right size, shape, and position, it is "slow” in emptying, thus showing a general "sluggishness" of the liver and gall bladder system.

In these cases bile salts or Epsom salts in small doses are given for two or three weeks and the patient is instructed to take thereafter bend- ing exercises with knees straight, horse back riding or any form of exercise that will squeeez or shake up the liver. Simply taking long deep breaths will send the floor of the chest -— diaphragm -- down against the blg soft liver and give it a squeere which invigorates the circulation and prevents sluggish- ness. rtemembel‘ a sluggish liver and slow emptying gall bladder can give you a very gloomy outlook on life.

The Iodine Industry

Iodine, which is important both in medicine and in the dyeing industry, was formerly obtained entirely from Seflweed. and Japan and some Eur- opean nations still produce 1y, from that source. During the past dolcn Years or so, however, most of the world's iodine has come from-Chile, being manufactured from the cal- lche or impure s um nitrate found so plentlfully in th t country. More recently, too, an industry has grown up in California, extracting iodine from the brine pumped from cll wells. Sin-I would like to draw atten- tion to the condition of our city streets. We have our city plow and the big tractor plow and also a new truck and plow tha should be able to clean every street in Charlotte- town in two hours. We have plenty of mechanical men not employed, who would be glad to operate these machines at a very reasonable sai- ary. In Ontario all the main roads in the country are cleared at night. In the morning business is as usual. Herc in the city, our streets are Just as you see them. We cannot make our deliveries. Merchants with horses and trucks try to deliver a few orders under these conditions, losing money. Surely we can have our streets plowed after storms at night, and ready for the morning's delivery and business. If Ontario can do this in the country, I think Charlotte- town, the Capital of P. E. I. can have every street cleaned by 6 A.M. daily.
