If this reference is made to the opinions of Liberal Conservative electors,it is both mean and unman'y. Who has a right to remonstrate with Dr. Jenkins, unless it be his friends and supporters ! The responsibility emanates from them to the representative, and if the representative will not listen he alone is responsible. There is no doubt Judge Alley is quite com- petent to do the work of Revising Barrister. Any barrister in Charlottetown is quite competent te do it. In fact, any sheriff or any menu who is competent to take the jvotes at an election is competent to register votes, and it is a pity that

would say, is quite objectionable. They are paid handsomely for all they do, and I do not see any necessity of supplementing their salaries. I quite agree with you as to

your remarks in reference to Judge Alley,

and would say that his appointment would bea mistake. George Alley is quite a dif- ferent man out of office from George Alley the Coun'y Court Judge. As recorder of votes he is just as fond of splitting hairs and mystifying matters as he is in the County Court. If it is left to Judge Alley to hold a Registration Court where he pleases, he will do as he did before: meet wherever he holds a County Court, and expect the electors to meet him at a certain hour, and if not there, then he would close up and depart. A Revising Barrister should hold courts of revision for the ac- commodation and convenience of the elec- tors, and should not be too stiff in even meeting them in every school district. Would Judge Alley lower his dignity by do- ing that? Unless the Franchise Act cle:rly specifies what he is to do, and binds him down to doit, there is no elasticity about his person to show that he has any desire to be accommodating to the electors. The man who wanted power enough to enable him to commit any person for contempt of court if they spoke crooked to him while on his way to or from a court, is not the man to be placed in any position of authority more than he has got. He has enough, and let him be content. I would decidedly say that it would be unwise to appoint any of the County Court Judges; and if they are appointed, they should be compelled to do the work for nothing. Under the circumstances let suitable Barristers be selected, and the appointment be given to them. This will give the Liberal-Conserva- tive electors, generally, satisfaction, and 1 don’t see that Judge Alley or his friends have any reason to be put out. Your views meet the approval of the supporters of the party,so farasIcan learn, and suitable steps should be put forth to convey the wishes of the party to the Government. Cattle Raising.

S1r,—I subscribed for your paper about a year ago. Herewith I enclose amount of subscription for 1886. My reason for tak- ing your paper was my interest in the farming of your Island Home.

You have just reason to be proud of your position as agriculturists, Your horses are a by-word of honor to your judgment and position as traders; your sheep, too, are well up to the standard of excellence. In fact, it is a great boon indeed for us Nova Scotia farmers to be able to make drafts from your herds and flocks to im- |} roe our stock.

{ often think if you were by some means to withdraw from Nova Scotia, all the horses at present in it that were imported from the Island, or their immediate descendants, those left would be but a poor lot. Goon; if we cannot keep pace with you in improvement, at least, we can follow in the distance and take what advantage we can from your improvements.

One thing, though,I cannot quite under stand in a class of farmers such as you al are, for counting eost and breeding only that which catches on to public opinion. and as a consequence causes the dollars to roll into you,-—why you overlook the good qualities of the little Jersey Cow, and give her such a poor place in your Exhibitions! I think it is pretty well acknowledged the

The Ontario folk have changed their opinion and; now they claim that there is no breed of cows that can excel the Jer- sey; and Professor Brown, of Guelph Agri- cultural College, in one of his recent reports, claims her to be the only tho- roughbred cow that it will pay to keep as a thoreughbred for practical farm work, outside of the value of her calves ; and you ‘all know what a Durham man Professor | Brown is, and no doubt he gave the Jersey a pretty severe test before he gave his ver- diet to the world. At the Toronto and Hamilton Shows of 1885, an open compe- tition, the Jersey stands ahead in returning

The Hon. D. Ferguson.

Srrk,—A writer in the Patriot, signing himself ‘‘Farmer,” makes some unjust allu- sions to the Honorable D. Ferguson. Such insinuations are unworthya man of the class to which ‘‘Farmer” professes to be long. He abuses without stint and seems to have a particular liking for the occupa tion he has chosen. Evidently he is actu- ated by the worst of motives. He cannot conceal his mafice. Slander is his stock in trade. To damage Mr. Ferguson in the estimation of the farmers is his object.

As is well known, Hon. Mr, Ferguson is a practical farmer. He hos contributed largely to the agricultural exhibits of the Provinee, in the most important branches. For a number of years he has taken a lead- ing part in the management of the Exhi- bitions. In doing so he has shown himself worthy of public confidence, and his actions have met with general approval. Even those who are politically opposed to him are free to admit that he has done more than any other man to advance the best interests of the Island. For his efforts in that direction he deserves the thanks of the whole community.

The schooners Eddy and M, A. Jewell,own- ed by Messrs Laird and Rattenbury, discharg- ed cargo and sailed for Mirimichi last week.

Notwithstanding the very dense fog which prevailed last Friday, some large catches of mackerel were taken by the ceines, Much difficulty was cxperienced in making the harbor. Many of the boats were run ashore, and one especially did not reach the harbor until 11 p m., the day following,

The Break Water bas greatly improved the harbor. Foreign vessels have on Cifferent occasions sought refuge in it. Over eight feet of water is sait to be on the bar at low tide, Itis to be hoped that Rustico Harbor will soon be provided with a life boat, which I presume would be promptly granted by the Government if applied tor. The very great necessity of a life boat at Rustico Harbor has been frequently felt,yet nothing has been done in the way ot procuriog that which would have on several occasions s*ved life and pro perty. In case ofa vessel being siranded at or near the harbor anda heayy sea rolling what steps can be taken to save the suffering crew from the jaws of death without the ser- vice of a lifeboat, and a selected crew? Such heart-rendering scenes are not of rare occur- rence on our shore, Men here have at differ- ent times undergone great peril and hard- ships while attempting to board stranded vessels with skiffs which were by no means suitable for such hezardous undertakings. Such goto prove that Rustico shov!d no longer be destitute of a well equipped life- boat service.

Last week a rumor was current to the effet that a gold mine was discovered in the vienity of Wheatley River. The astounded inhabit- ants were for a time very anxious to hear from head quarters concerning the reel value of the ore which was then being prepared to be forwarded to Charlottetown, to undergo an analytical] process, when to the utter surprise of the prospectors they were informed that their much prized ore was but fregments of a stone plate which had succumbed to the in- tense heat of a neighbors cooking-stove. There is no doubt it bore a very metaliferous aspect. The sad disappintment is very em- barassing indeed.
