-Fire which broke out some- time during Wednesday night or Thursday morning completely do- stroyed a dance ball at Mt. Plas- aant. owned and operated by Mr.

Three new members were intro- duced and welcomed to the League. The coriespondence read by the corresponding secretary, Mrs Malcolm Steele. included a letter from the Mother superior of the Convent expressing thanks for donations of money by the League for several purposes and a reply to 3 letter of condolence that had been sent out. Good reports were given by the convenors of the various standing committees.

It was decided to sponsor a film at the Capitol Theatre on June 14 and 15. Mrs. Thomas Linkleiter was appointed , convenor of the CCI.I1'.I'il"-Ce in charge of the annual envelope collection which will take place during the week of May 20th.

At the final meeting. before summer recess of the Summerside Board of Trade held last evening in the Town Hall. various -matters of interest to the community were given consideration by the mem- bers..

The meeting was presided over by Mr. R.5. Hinton. K.C.. the president and was more than us- usually well attended.

The matter of better approaches to the Town and better control at the C. N. R. crossing both east and west and on King Street were dis- cussed and Mr. Fred Bell of the transportation committee was eni- powered to write to the C.N.R. authorities earnestly requesting that suitable warnings be placed at these points and that a copy of the text be forwarded to the summerslde Town Council wli.h a recommendation that the Couiicli

submit a similar request.

For the fisheries committee Mr. George Key reported that the mat- ter of protection for the smells during the spawning season had been referred to Mr. L. J. Murphy. fisheries inspector and that Mr. Murphy had written to the effect that nine wardens had been ap- pointed and that the regulations in this regard would in the future be more efficiently enforced.

The department, the letter stai- ed. had employed a number ct fisheries wardens. beginning work the middle of April and continued until late fall. '

Discuss Road

Mr. Fred Bell, chairman of the transportation commltt said that there were indications that the Kensington-Bo den highway was shortly to be repaired and that it would appear from the position of the stakes in the ground along the road that the highway was to be only sixty feet wide. It was the opinion of the members present ithst immediate action be taken to ascertain if this was so. as sit eighty-foot highway was the width to be expected.

It was moved by Mr. 'I'.E. Hic- key that Mr. Bell contact the Min- ister of bile Works, get all av- ailable inf ation and if neces- su-rly have the secretary call a spe- oi meeting of the board to deal with the matter.

Mr. J. F. Arnett paid high tribute to the late Mr. Campbell and the long service he had given to the board during his lifetime. It was moved that ii. letter of condolence be sent to the family of the late Mr. Campbell and also to the fam- ily of the late Mr. R.T. Holman. also one of the very active and prominent members of the board down through the years.

Congratulations Extended

Mr. Reagh Tinney called the at- tention of the board to the fact that Mr. C. R. Rogers, the only liv- ing charter member of the Sum- merside Board of Trade had this week reached his 84th birthday and it was agreed that the board for- wtirrl to Mr. Rogers best wishes for good health and the compliments of the members.

Considerable discussion topic place regarding the proposal to use the funds held in trust by the board to furnish a room in the new hospital. In view of the fact that this flind was originally set up to be used as advertising for the fox industry, it was suggested bv Mr. J. F. Mr. Holmfiii pointed out that it is a question that is left to the three large retail stores in Summerside to decide and the suggestion made was that a special committee of the board be formed whose duties would be to work in cooperation with the Town Council in suggest- ing what days would be observed locally as holidays and to deal also with the matter of closing hours. This committee. he said. should be made up of represents- tlies of every class of business. the industries. the small stores and the retail stores so that all would have a voice in formulating the policy to be followed In this mat- ter.

HENRY WARD BEECIIER VVILLIAMS

- On Thursday, March 9th., 1960, Henry Ward Beecher Wil- liams entered into rest at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ronald Hutchinson, Summerside. Although at an advanced age and in failing health for several years, he re- iained his faculties and was able to be up and about his room un- til the time of his death.

Mr. Williams was born at Bide- ford April 17th.. 1868, the eldest son of the late Albert Richard and Mary Amelia Williams. He -was a hrlillant mathematician and schol- ar, an excellent penmat; In his early life he was Accountant with the late I-Ion. William Richards of Eidefcrd. P.E.I. during the days of ship building at that place. In 1910 he accepted the position of registrar in the Court House at summerside. which position he held until 1916 when he moved to Port Hill as accountant and priv-

ate secretary to the late I-Ion. senator John Yeo. Besides serving in this capacity. Mr. Williams did a great deal of legal work for peo- ple in the surrounding districts and will be greatly missed for his sound judgment and advice.
