British Parliament.

The debate on the Irish Land Purchase Bill was resumed in the Commons this evening. Smith, Government Leader, ap- pealed to the House to assist in closing the discussion on the Bill. The Government, he said, was desirous of meeting the oppostiion as far as possible and would accept the series of amendments, proposed by Healy relating to sub-letting to iaborers and also a provision that the land com- mission shall not sanction an advance of money to # tenant uuless they are certain the application of the tenant was not made under duress. The goyeanment a'so intended to promote the bill dealing with the registration of titles. Morley and Shaw also expressed themselves satisfied with these concessions. Smith, thereupon, moved that the purchase bill be read a third time, but Healy objected on account vf undue haste, and thehuuss adjourned.

Carrying the Mails.

MontTreAL, Nov. 28.

The firms of Anderson, Anderson & Co., and F. Green & Co., of London, managing proprietors of the Orient Line, have re- newed their offer to the Ottawa Govern- ment to carry Cavadian mails. They offer to build three express steamers of 7400 tons apiece, to steam not less than 20 knots an hour, and to make the passage between Halifax and Piymouth in five days and to Rimouski in five or six hours longer time. The steamers will surpass the Um- bria and Etruria in beauty and speed. The above named firms show that while in 1-82 4,086 cabin passengers were brought to Montreal, this number had fallen off in L887 to 2,744, aud only had increased last year because some of the lines carried pas- sengers to Montreal for the same price as The vessels will be ready with- in 18 months after the contract is awarded.

Alfred St. Jean, a commercial traveler for Arthur Eaves, jeweler, of this city, lost a trunk fall of samples worth $6,000, while going from Sherbrooke to Waterloo last night. Detectives are on the track.

Deceased had attend- ed St. Dunstan's college for some years and was, for a year or 80, a teacher there. Not being in very robust health, he discontinued his studies and retired to his native parish where he had a farm. His many former com- panions in the college, we feel sure, will deep- ly regret to learn of hisdeath. We offer our sympathy to his wife and relatives in their bereavement.
