‘The Cadre

for months I have thought of what words of wisdom I should

attempt to impart in this, my first.

editorial of the new school sea- son. Potential topics ranged from tips on how to successfully beg for a student loan, to the hazards of smoking/drinking something you aren't fully sure of which the contents are comprised of, to the value of good time management skills. Know what I settled on? Bupkis!

I couldn't decide what was most important, most valuable, would affect/connect with the majority of the student body, and I was willing to let people find out without having to “learn the hard way" as I already have. After all, which is more effective: me telling stories about the stupid things I've done while inebriated in an attempt to spare someone the same subsequent anguish I experienced, or letting someone learn such a lesson while they're spread-eagle on the floor, the "Dear God. If you'll just make the room stop spinning I'LL NEVER DRINK’ AGAIN!" prayer being incoherently mum- bled repeatedly. I think the latter.

So, once again I managed to find myself assisting with the layout of an issue, something supposed to occur only after all submis- sions have been received, before I've written my editorial.

Thus, in first-issue tradition, I have decided to extol the virtues of volunteering/working for the Cadre, hoping a number of you readers will fall victim to my brainwashing and contribute to

our cause throughout the course of the year. -

There are a number of paid posi- tions with the Cadre - many more than in previous years - but the paper survives on the efforts of volunteers. Without contributors (fancy terminology for free labour) submitting articles - be they letters to the editor, opinion pieces, student information, (or for all of you really twisted peo- ple out there) or "news" pieces done to cover “high-priority” assignments - there quite plainly wouldn't be a paper to publish.

The fringe benefits for volun- teers are fairly modest - pizza at Friday's meetings (simply referred to by some staff as "food day"), the occasional SU associ- ated freebie which for party hun- gry students is always popular, and phone calls to outside events for press passes - but we're always willing to do what we can to assist with submissions. The intangible benefits of contribut- ing to the campus community while hanging out with all us "paper folk" can't be over-rated either - we're pretty fun loving people; many good times are had.

To make the Cadre more open to submissions and integrated with the community, there will be a new Cadre website (cadre.upei.ca) rolling out short- ly. Eventually this will be inte- grated with the new UPEI stu- dent blog site, weblogs@upei (weblogs.upei.ca) which is cur- rently in its early stages of roll- out (as weblogs@upei is still in

the early stages of a sectional rollout, full coverage will be given when the site is more fully operational) allowing open UPEI student communication, blog style, which the Cadre will inter- act seamlessly with.

Keep in mind my frequent use of

the word "eventually" in regards to both the Cadre and weblogs@upei sites. Both will soon be presented in skeleton form but their true power and scope will be developed over the course of the coming months. Be patient. But it will happen. Any who don't believe it, or any of the blog/campus community/silos of information and interaction rhet- oric I was spewing towards the end of last year, suit yourselves. I'll be too busy proving you wrong to argue.

For now, everyone's officially invited to drop by the office Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:30 to participate in meetings. Come

really approachable and general- ly don't bite. This is the UPEI students’ newspaper, an informa- tion and humour source for stu- dents that's also followed by some Officially influential people both in and out of this institution. Help make us all that we can be and what you want us to be - make your voice heard!
