Forty ucres of pigeons roost nightly io the Indian Territory about fifty mile. south-west of Joplin, Mo. The hunters spend the night in the woods and kill with shot-guus and clubs till morning. when they load wagons with the bird- and drive away to sell pigeons at from 10 to 25 cents a dozen. Scores of wagon loads have thus been disposed of, stil: there is no *ppurent diminution in the number of birds, nor do they fail to re- turn nightly to their roost.

Getting Rid of Rate.

A correspondent of The English Mail gives on: or two valvable hints for ridding premiscs ot rats. One very good plan, he says, is te nail ared hetring ou the wall of the ware. house or place infested, about eighteen inches from the flor; on this, a httle to one side, beneath the fish, place a brick or piece o} wood near the wall. At an equal distance o:: the other side set a. ordinary steel snap-tray not baited. The rats, in jumping off from th« brick to get at the herring, after a few at. tempts are sure to fall downin the trap. This is a good permanent plan, as it is some what above their comprehension. If rats have undermined the foundation walls, which they do sometimes to such an extent as to endang:r the building, it is of no use to attempt to sto; them out by tampering their borrows with broken glass bottles, for they work diligently to make fresh oncs. A better way is to puta shovelful of dry sand over every lor. The rats soon come up through this, but let half the sand into the burrow, which, un- like earth, they cannot either force or carry

again, and by repeating this at every fresh-

ned place their rans become quite filled up, and they make up your foundations again. By this means I have known a granary that was infested with rats quite cleared of them, All their burrows being at last filled with sand they were compelled to betake themselves

elsewhere. The Rapief diesccric Light.

The following is a description of the Rapieff electric light, as usel in the London 7'imes office. The light is produced from two pairs of carbons placed one above the other. ‘The upper part are V shaped, and the lower like an inverted V, the point of ignition being the junction of the two pairs. The carbons are

ept in contact by a combination of the weight of the cord and a pulley. The upper pair of carbons are positive ; the lower pair negative. The carbous will burn twelve h: urs, and can be renewed without the slight +st interruption of the light The%division of light is perfect. Six distinct lights are suspended in the large machine-room, each enclosed in an opaque globe working separately. the electricity being generated- by a two-horse-power Gramme, capable, if necessary, of working up to tweaty lights. ‘The illumination was exceedingly brilliant, producin; a striking contrast with the gas leit burningin the room. The light is not yet applied to the com >osing room, but preparations are ee made to adapt it there in a way to obviate all chance of injurv to the compositors eyes. The current is alt >rnat- ing, so a3 to equalize the consum_tion of the two sets of carbon.
