A conference of more than or- dinary importance will open at Charlottetown on Saturday, Aug. 9. and carry through into Exhibi- tion Week. when the Mlnlsters of Agriculture for the Provinces of Canada and their Deputies will convene. to discuss agricultural prob of common and importance. The conference is the third of I. series started at Toron- to. Last year the meeting was held at Victoria, B.C., and it is the intention to move to other Provinces from year to year.

Both Provincial and Federal veterinarian officials last night emphasised that there was no need for alarm among farmers of Prince Edward Island over the outbreak of,anthrax. They state that they believe it has been isolat- ed and affirm that it is under com- plete control.

Three farms in the Prince county area- near Roseville have been quarantined and a. close watch is being kept there. No further out- breaks have been reported.

The farm of Mr. lfeber Profit was reported as free from the dis- ease although at first i it was t” ght his hard of cattle might have been infected. It has now been definitely ascertained that this' is not the case.

The meeting, which had been adjourned some time ago pend. lng the result of the P. E. Island Potato Marketing Board annual meeting and a. statement of policy from that organization, was at.- tended by their president, Mr. Donald MacDonald, on invitation. At the request of the chairman Mr. MacDonald outlined the llcencing regulations and answer- ed variousouestions dealing with the detailed operation of the scheme.

A new mechanical street sweep- er will be purchased by the City following a special meeting of the City Council held yesterday afternoon at City Hall. All of the Councillors were present at the meeting with Councillors Elmer MacDonald. G. R. Keefe and Arthur Gormley opposing the pur- chase.

Councillor Frank Storey, chair- man of the Streets Committee, proposed the purchase and stated that the machine would save the city approximately d13.000 on the basis of the figures available for last year. He said that the cost last year had been 522,000 of which 313,800 had been spent on' manual labor. So far this year the cost to the city of street sweeping has been 310,000 and he expected that this would rise to meet last year's total by'the end of the season.

At the monthly meeting of the F Playground Com- mission last evening arrangements were made to hold a Soap Box Derby and children's concert at Connaught square at p.m. on Wednesday the 13th, put on by the children playing in this square.

Final closing exercises for the year's activities were approved to be held on the evening of August 21th on Memorial Fwd, with 'the children from all the playgrounds taking part. A special program will be provided to display the training received by the children during the summer and the public is invited to attend.

Stewart said last night that the story "soupds very nice, but it is not based on fact." There have been no developments, he said, since the Transport Min- ister. Hon. Lionel Chevrier, was here last week and heard repre- sentations on the subject.

As reported at the time, the Min- ister appeared favcrably impressed but could make no connnitments. He emphasized that he would first have to get a report from his ne- partmental engineers. and then ob- tain Cabinet approval of the pro- ject.

Recalling the Minister's state- mentliast night, Mayor Stewart pointed out that a third step would be required before the project could be assured. This would be for the City of. Charlottetown to acquire the necessary land.

O'I'I'AWA, Aug. 7 - (Special) - Extension of the runways of Char- lottetown Airport will be among the many proposed projects to be studied by the Air Services Division of the Department of Transport prior to reaching a de- clslon and placing a vote in 1953 Parliamentary estimates, The Guardian learned today.

The Department of Transport is Canada's major agency for the building of alrflelds. Not only does it build and maintain civil alr- ports across the country but it built airflelds during World War II for the British Commonwealth

Whether the Charlottetown Alr- port will get the nod for extension from Transport Minister Chevrier and the Treasury Board depends on several factors. First of these is proof that extension of exist- ing runways is necessary and de- sirable and that increased traffic warrants such an outlay. The Civil Aviation Division also interests it- self ln probable costs of land and buildings to be acquired. in air- port extensions.

In any case, no firm decision on the matter will be made by the Minister until a complete depart- mental survey is made and all data compiled.
