St. Patrick’s night was celebrated in this plece by a grand concert, given by the loeal talent of the place in aid of the P. E Ielaud Hospital. At Ovawa a few davs ago Sir Charles Tapper delivered an interesting adcrese. He madea playful allusion toa refer~ ence made in the re3olution to his “ad- vancing yeare,” and said that he was not conscious of any great advance, for he still telt young and ~ hoped 10 we spared for some years yet to fight the battles of the Conservative party. Whether these years were few or wmavy he would devote them entirely io the rervice of hie courtry and to the great Conserva~ tibe party »nder which Caneds had grown aol developed unt! it was the wooder and admiration ef the world. He was not working for personal ambition, for there was no gift in the Lands ef the eovereigy or the people which be had not enjoyed, but he was working,and would continue to work fox the preservation of that con~ federation in tbe formation of which he had assisted and which was now threateved with destruction by men who had pot contributed one brick to the noble structure (Applause) He declined to criticize the Government, as he would bave an oppor- tunity of doing so in the manner he liked be»t—in Parliament—face to face with bis opponents, but he did want to congratu~ iate the Liberal party, noton anything they had done, but on something they had notdowe. For eighteen years they had abusing the National Policy and say- ing that when they got into power every vestige of protection would be ewept away. Well, they had got into power, and far from sweeping protection away, they had adopted the National policy holus bolus. (Laughter and applause.)
