"Just as they are always watch- ing around the dear Old Briar- patch," said Peter. and grinned in the sauclest way.
Old Man Coyote grinned back at him. "It must be nice to be wanted by so many. I don't know what it is to be wanted myself," said he.
"Does Grubby Gopher have a both ways coat like Miner the Mole?" asked Peter.
"A both ways coat! What in the world are you talking about? What is a both ways coat?" exclaimed Old Man Coyote. and the puzzled look oi his sharp face was funny to see.
"It is a coat that can be brushed
both ways and still be smooth. It can be brushed toward his tail and it will lie smooth Just as you-r coat and mine will. Or it can be brushed toward his head and it will be Just as smooth. You can't do that with mine, That is what I call a both ways coat." explained Peter. "Has Grubby got. that kind oi a coat?" he added. ' Old Man Coyote shook his head. “L don't think so. No. I'm sure he hasn't. And he hasn't such a soit ‘coat either," said he.
"I wonder." said Peter. "i! they are cousins. They are so much alike in the way they live they must. be related," said Peter.
"Who? Do you mean Miner the Mole and Grubby Gopher?" Old Man Coyote wanted to know.
"Yes," replied Peter.
“Oi course notl" exclaimed Old Man Coyote. "What put. such an idea as that into your head?"
"Their living so much alike," Peter replied.
"Listen. Iongears! They are not at all alike. They don't even live so much alike as you think they do. They are no more cousins than you and I. They don't eVen eat the same kind o! iood. Both dig tun- nels and live under ground, and that is all there is really alike about them," declared Old Man Coyote.
“I know what Miner the Mole eats. He eats worms and insects. Hunting tor them in the ground is what keeps him digging all the time. What does Grubby eat?“ asked Peter.
“Plant food the same as you do only he eats roots as ‘well as tho green parts oi plants," replied Old Man Coyote. I-le cuts plants around his open doors. drags them under ground to eat, and closes who doors. l-le doesn‘t eat worms." l "Neither do I," said Peter.
