Women's Canadian Club

Reference has been made in these columns to the desirability of estab- lishing a. Canadian Club in Charlot- tetown. In this connection it is in- teresting to note that an auxiliary or- ganization. the Women's Canadian Club, is functioning successfully in other Provinces. A copy of the con- stitution of the Saint John branch has been received. The purpose of the Club is "to foster patriotism and to encourage a deeper and more sei-l- ous interest among women in the in- stitutions. history, literature and arts and resources of Canada, as well as tobring before them leading ques- tions of the day, both, at home and abroad, and to endeavor to unite Canadian women in such work as may be within their powers for the welfare and progress of the Domini- on." Swords Into Ploughahares

Looking backwards "over the eleven years of soldiers’ settlement in Can- ada, the Iegionary, official organ of the Canadian Legion, B.E.S.L-, finds that 6,000,000 acres of land were bought or homesteaded, and that, conservatively estimated, more than 2,000,000 acres have been brought into a state of cultivation through the efforts oi our soldier settlers. At an average crop production oi $10.00 per acre the contribution to the wealth of this country from the lands thus settled has been between $20,000,000 and $25,000,000 annually,

It will be recalled that at the con- clusion oi the war, land settlement spnlng to the forefront as a general rc-establishment project. The scope_ cf the Soldiers‘ Settlement Board, previously established in 1917, was expanded, and the Soldiers’ Settle- ment Act passed in i919. Under the Board's supervision, 31,324 war veter- ans were established on the land. Of this number 24.715 were granted loans for the purchase of land, stock and equipment. The remaining 6,833 es- tablished themselves on crown lands without loans but under the super- vision of the Board. It is estimated that another 10,000 established them- selves on crown lands without calling on the Board, so that a. total oi more than 40,000 war veterans chose this means oi re-estabiishmeni in civilian life. Home 24,000 oi’ them have stuck to the task. some with amazing suc- cess, the greater number with the same results as the average civilian farmer, while others have persevered in spite of recurring war disabilities, crop failures and other discouraging circumstances, over which they had little or no control.

“What becomes of our politicians?" is the subject of an interesting ar- ticle in MacLeans Magazine for Da- cember. It tells about quite s, hgsi; oi well-known public men of Canada, their various callings. many of whom have passed away. and many who are still alive. What their several ceilings and professions in ordinary life hnd been. and of the survivors. it tells where they are now located and how they mend their time irrwork. leisure or sport.

It is the ambition oi many or the more gifted and capable politicians to become ‘ " oi their respective parties in federal or provincial at- fairs. usually graduating upward from the lower to the higher, and among all the professions and callings, the lflwyers have much the best chance oi gaining high positions. The writer falls into one or two minor errors, but they do not detract from the interest of his article to any extent.

He tells’ that of ten different Prime Ministers of the Dominion eight have been lawyers. and only one Liberal and one Conservative constitute his exceptions to the general rule. If we remember rightly neither Hon. Alex- ander Mackenzie, su- Mackenzie Bowell 110i‘ Si!‘ Charles Tupper were lflwyers, though each of them was at some time Premier of the Dominion. What is true of lawyers as to gaining premierships in federal affairs is also largely true in. the provincial arena. Speaking generally, the chancesof a lawyer and s, doctor in politics are V"? unequal, though a popular doctor easily obtains his election, getting more votes outside oi party lirles than a lawyer does. especially among wo- men voters.

Once elected the inequality of chances to obtain promotion becomes apparent, and on a subsequent de- feat, equally so. The defeated law- yer, if his party is in power easily gets a quick reward in a iudgeship, with a good salary for life, for, wheth- er retlred at '75 years or not. super- annuation on fullsalary is his. The defeated doctor may possibly get a senatorship or a governorship. but the cilances for such plums are few and far between. Parents who wish to get the best that is going in the way of political rewards should have them study law.

A case of, romance in politics is cited in the article beiore us. It is that of Hon. J. C. Patterson. who was born in Ireland in 1830. He entered the civil service in Canada. but re- signed. like a wise man, to study law. In 1878 he was elected to the House of Commons, wherehe became a Cab- inet Minister and later was made Governor oi Manitoba. At 'll years of age he was appointed a Commis- sioner to investigate all titles to islands in the arctic seas, which belonged by discovery or conquest to Great Brit- ain, and, consequently to Canada. Until a. few months ago when he died, he was working on the unfinish- ed task. There are, so many islands in the Arctic! Investigating them doubtless was a lucrative task for him. and will also be for some other law- yer yet to finish.

What became of Laurlers “Cabinet of all talents?’ of the Borden War Cabinet and the Meighen Cabinet are interesting stories. Sir Robert Bor- den plays golf in summer and goes down. south in winter, we are fold. He goes to market in the morning. buys vegetables for his dinner a’. night, takes a light luncheon at the Rideau Club, goes out and plays a round of golf, and comes home to play a rubber of bridge in the even- ing. Being a. man of wealth, he sometimes takes a cautious nip at the stock market. He is understood to be writing a constitutional history of Canada since 1896.

Sir Thomas White is practicing law and writing a book setting out Canada's part in financing the Great War. Charles Doherty. who was Borden's Minister of Justice, before and dur- in; the war, is practicing law in Montreal, and no matter what gov- ernment is in oflicc. manages to have it give him a retainer. It was once publicly charged that Mr. Dohert-y had drawn six dollars a day from the Dominion Government for every day since he was born. He was once a judge and retired with a judge's pen- sion. Then he entered the House of Commons, getting both a pension and an indemnity. 111m he became g, Minister and had his ministerial sal- ary added to the indemnity and pen- sion.

Hon. Arthur Melghen, ex-Premier, is associated with an investment trust company in Toronto, and rumor has it that he. as wall as Crerar, and Prank Oliver, will be candidates of their respective parties in the com- ing Dominion election. N. W. Howell. who led the Liberal party in Ontario for several years, and who was made President of the Council in the Bor- den Union Cabinet, went back tothe practice of law and is reputed to be making 075,000 a year. When Banting discovered insulin and was able to cure diabetes in the young and to arrest its progress in older people, ho stimulated research men all over the world to investigate the properties of insulin and its af- fect upon the organs and tissues of the body.

And so we are . learning almost weekly of some other condition in which insulin has been of service. Similarly when Drs. Minot and Mur- phy were able to show that a diet of liver would so increase the number of red corpimcles in the blood that the dread ailment pernicious anaemia could be cured, interest in the pro- perties of liver was aroused.

And from this discovery we are now learning that liver-is of use in a number of other conditions in the body. Working on the idea that as dropsy (accumulation of water in the tissues) while due to the kidneys not getting rid of this water, is really caused by the fact that the liver is not doing its work of gettlngrid oi wastes. a. research physician.- used the the liver diet in a. severe case of dropsy. i

The patient had a condition in which the abdomen and lower limbs were greatly distended by water. 1hr- aminatlon showed that the kidneys were only getting rid of about one third of the normal amount of water.

Dye tests showed the liver to be at fault.

Almost immediately after the ad- ministration of liver, the kidneys be- came very active, and increased the output of urine by six times, the very next day.

In ten days, with liver treatments, the amount oi’ water in the tissues was greatly reduced, aild in fifteen days it had entirely disappeared.

When the liver diet was discon- tinued the amount of urine thrown on’ dropped below normal again,

showing that it was the liver dietthat removed the water from the tissues.

On the day procuding the storm the weather in 8t. John was foggy in the morning followed by partly cloudy in afternoon becoming overcast at night. _

On the day of the storm (Monday, Oct. 4th) the early morning was fog- gy, then part clouded and by 7 a. m. fine and warm, in the afternoon the heat was particularly oppressive, while to the southward the sky assumed a dull leaden colour becoming com- pletely clouded by 5 p. m. As the af- ternoon advanced the wind blcw in fi-tfui angry squa-lls and the rising tide was noticed to be coming in uu- usually early. At 5 p. m. Vthe wind had increased to a gale and rain began failing at 6 p. m. Buildings Flooded

Bilildlngs near the water front were flooded in lower floors, warehouses were destroyed, everywhere signs of destruction met the eye, slips, coves and beaches were filled with debris from the wreckage. -

In Charlotte County and the ad- Jacent United States Coast the gale was most severe. One hundred and twenty-one vessels were beached near St. Andrews, N. 8., Calais, Machias and Eastport, Me. Near Point Le- preaux the Barque Genii was wreck- ed and eleven lives lost.

St. Andrews arid St. George suffer- ed to a. great extent, houses were un- rooied, completely demolished and streets blocked with debris of the gale. At the latter place the roof of
