Sik,—There has been considerable cor- respondence published lately regarding the formation of a protective agency for our merchants; which, however, seems to have been written viewing the subject mostly from one standpoint. While I fully en- dorse sll that has been said, (at least what 1 have seen) | think the credit system has ancther, a much more far-reaching and genera) bearing, viz, its effect on the cus- tomer who pays) Everyone knows a mer. chant must live on the profits of his busi-

ness. Besides cost and charges of goods, wages, rents, and insurance, be must calculate on a _ certain

amount for depreciation and bad debis All but the latter are legitimate, but it is not. We who pay fer our goods should not be asked to contribute daily to the sap- port of those who are either too lsay to work, too thriftless to economize, or tou dishonest to pay tor the necessaries of iife anil the luxuries they indulge in. A fitting iiusiration of this principl+ is prominent in the conduct of the liquor dealer who, when a customer got away with a gallon of whiskey, said, ‘‘Well, someone shall pay

for it.” So he quietly poured a gallon of water into the cask from which the whiskey had been drawn.

Whence comes all these thousands, yes, millions, laid by in the savings banks and other institutions besring interest ? Do nove of the depositors owe our merchants balances on rnaning acoounts. To be plain, is this honest? Yet these good people would be ineulted if you hiated that their conduct was net honest and honorable. Many a poor bunt honest man ia on the debtors liat by being an unwilling and unfortunate creditor of these very men. Pesition is nothing. In fact, the higher the position app rently the less need there is to respect the condition of those below. Could some of our people remember former days how differently would they act.
