TORONTO

TORONTO (CP)—Golds made their best single session showing this year but the rest of the stock market failed to recover from early losses and closed slightly down Friday on moderately- active trading.

On’ index, golds, paced by a strong senior group, were ahead 1% points. Western oils lost around one-third. Base metals dipped more than: one-quarter.

McIntyre scored the big win in golds, up 3 at 89%. Campbell Red Lake was up 1 at 11% and Dome added % at 18%. Gains were well scattered among the juniors in a 10-cent range.

Uraniums were weak. Algom was hardest hit, off % at 1°'% while Gunnar and_ Consolidated Denison were down %. Senior base metals were easier as Lab- rador dipped -% at 27 and % losses’ went to -International Nickel, Noranda and Steep Rock.

Western oils were not active. Hudson’s Bay dipped % at 17% in the closing minutes. Canadian Husky lost % at 11%.

NEW YORK (AP)—News that eading banks had increased in- ‘erest rates upset the stock mar- set Friday. It declined under a wave of late selling.

Before the news came, stocks were mixed at best.

Word that the banks had in- creased the prime rate for loans to 4% per cent from four per cent came in the final half hour of trading.

Gold shares were strong all day in response to a rise in the price of gold on the London bul- lion market to its highest figure in five years.

McIntyre Porcupine rose 4 points, Homestake 3%, Dome Mines: 1% and Campbell Red Lake %.

The Associated Press average of 6 stocks fell 90 cents to. $229.20.

_ Heavily traded losers included ~ U.S. Steel, off 2%.

Internationa] Nickel lost 1% in the Canadian list.

. Trading, quiet in the morning, slowed down towards the close. Sources said this was at least partially due to some investors leaving town early for the holiday weekend. —

Avro racked: up its second straight good gain, amid specula- ‘tion that the company would get aircraft orders from the United States. The stock was up % at 10%, Thursday it opened at 9%.

Papers, with St. Lawrence

- Corp. up % at 17%, were the only gainers on the index. Other firm spots wefe the steels and pipelines.

Foods, constructions, beverages |

and base metals were mixed, ‘and the other stock classifications were narrowly lower. Most changes were confined to frac- tions.
