The first "if" previously men- tioned, refers to the defense. Ob- serve what could have happened if West had held up his spade ace for one round. He would win the second round and then lead his heart. Now. heart continuation: by East would defeat the contract! With dummy void of trumps, it would do South no good to dis- card a diamond on the third, be- cause a fourth heart lead would establish West's spade ten for the setting trick.

The second "if" referred to South's play. South could have in- sured the contract by cashing the club ace at the second trick, going over to the diamond king. and leading the club queen, upon which he could discard his remaining heart, and in that way absolutely prevent West from winning two trump tricks.

He had been taught to hide from any Tawk, big or small. This was a big Hawk. He was high in the sky, sailing in circles. Leaper came over and sat down just outside the hide-out. "Why are you afraid of that fellow!" he asked. '

"He's a Hawk. You better get out of sight. You can crawl under here with rne if you want to." said the young Chipmunk politely. "Hawks eat Chipmunks." he added. He shivered at the thought.

The big bird with the broad wings suddenly closed his wings and seemed to fall out of the sky. There was a great splash right in the midle of the Smiling Pool. Then those big wings were in mo- tion again, lifting the big bird up in the air. In his great claws was a fish. l-le flew off with it.

It was Plunger the Owrey, often called Fish Hawk. He is e fisher- man. not a hunter. There was nothing for Little Stripe; to f”; He doesn't eat Chipmunks. maper was right about that.
