By Staff The Netted Gem now knows approximately what it’s supposed to "be doing. At last Sunday’s Council meeting, Council approved a newspaper policy drawn up by a committee consisting of the Gem editor, the current and prospective VP’s EXter- nal, the Gem advertising manager, and a Gem staffer. The policy includes job descriptions for the position of Editor-at-Large, photo- grapher, and the newly- created one of Productio Editor. ‘ .It also inscribes on paper details of operation pre— viously passed on by word of mouth, 'such as distribution, deadline, content, . and editing policies. -

Following the Statement of Principles of CUP (Canadian University Press) the news- paper now “has the right to prohibit publication ~ of material that it deems to be sexist, racist, or homophobic, or that contravenes Canadian and/or PEI laws on libel or hate literature.’ ’

(‘Homophobic’ means any- thing showing fear of or hostility‘ towards homo- seXuals.)

The committee was in- itiated in January on the recommendation of the Selection Board, in order to give the paper’s staff some guidelines. It is recognized however, that the Student Union cannot dictate 4. its opinions to the newspaper and, in fact, that this is not in

I) That the newspaper must provide a forum for free of ‘ ideas opinions among, limited to, the students of

2) That the newspaper shall provide current, accurate, and unbiased news articles on national,- international issues, but with the main emphasis on campus
