When, in 1829, Canada had but 80 post. offices, Lt. Col. Edwin Pridham. was
‘appvinted postmaster at Greenville, Argen-
teml county, Quebec. Fifty-four years will have elapsed on the 5th of April since that app intment, and the gallant colonel still retains the office, and sends the Mail a neat P. O. N. Y. C., or post-office Now Year's card, gotten up in a similar style to the new Canadian postal card. The card bears on _the reverse side, ‘‘Born December 17, 1795; ap| ointed postmaster Greenville, April 5, 1829. Number of ‘post-offices in Canads in 1826, 80 ; number of post offices in Canada iu 1883, 6,500.” Col. Pridham has two sons in the postal service, of whom cne, Mr Frederick Pridham, bas been twenty- five years in the P,Q. Inspector's office in Montreal, and the other, Mr. Richard Pridham, has been eleven yearsin the mail service on the T,G and R. railway. In polities Col. Pridhbam is a life long Con- servative. There are probably few families who can show so loug and continued ser- vice in the postal departments of any country. — Toronto Mail.

It is stated in Montreal that negotiations are almost concladed for amaigamarion of the North Shore and Rome and Watertown Railways and Richelieu and St. Lawrence Navigstion Companies with the Grand lrank, so as to form a monopoly of all land and water traffic on the St. Lawrence. On the other hand it is stated that a very powerful steamboat company is being or- vaniged in Kingston, wita Kirkpatrick, M. P , at the head to run steamers through to Quebec ard that the Pacific Reilway is in- terested in the new company. The steam- ers are to be iron, and will be built on the Clyde and brought ont in sections. Mean- ‘tine a number of steamers will be charter- ed so that the line may commence opera- tions with the opening of navigation.

PRoposEeD ABROGATION OF THE FISWERIES ‘Treaty —In the U. S. Senate on Wednes- ‘day, Mr. Frye of Maine, effered a resolu- tion requesting the President to notify Great Briain of our desire to abrogate the ‘fisheries clanses of the Treaty of Washing- _tomn. Mr. Frye said that he was aware that this could not be done before July 1, 1882. but anthority ought to be given the |Peesident at once. He said that returns at Boston and Gloucester showed that Ameri- ean fishermen derived no benefit from the treaty. The advantage was all on the side of Great Britain. It was time that these clauses were abolished. The resvintion was
