Hon. W. D. Stewart, being caiied apon. jotimated that a charge might soon be effected in the mauagement of the schoo. If the government took charge of it, he would like to be clearly understood, i would become a nationa! school, perfecti) clear of all denominationai influences, and free to all creeds and Classes. Every means would be taken to bring the schools in town and conntry to a high state of effi clency. Attempts had been made to defeai the School Law in certain quarters whic. he believed would be fatile. The law would be abused, Mr. Manning, the Superintend- eit, would be aitacked, but he was certain that both would outlive all opposition. The Public Schools’ Act, he was satistied, Was a gxood one, and would confer great bevel s ou the people of the Islard; and he wantea those who bad seen Mr, Manning work, anc had benefitted by his instruction, to tel: their friends and neighbors the simple truti: nbout him. This was all he asked, and this would be a safficient recc mmendation.
