The work of relief has gone on vigorously to- day and many touching scenes were wit- nessed.

Fire Department.

HE attention of Citizens is hereby directed to the following section of the Civic By-law regulating the Fire Department:

11. The occupant of each house in the city, whose yearly rent shall exceed thirty dollars, shall provide and keep one leather bucket, to hold at least two gallons, with his or her name painted thereon, Each house shall have at least two good ladders, forming a complete connection between the ground and the ridge of the roof. Any occupant of a house omit- ting to have either the ladders or bucket, or failing te have them in good repair, shall, on conviction, be liable to the penalties of this By-law.

All parties failing to supply their houses with the ladders required before the lst of May, will be prosecuted.

The penalty is as high as thirty dollars.
