Estimation of Pedigree.

In listening to a breeder extolling the merits of the pedigree of an inferior ani- mal, we are always reminded of an exceed- ingly illustrative and somewhat humorous incident. A thoroughly characteristic Hiberian, and an unrepresentative Scotch- man were two of a party of tourists that were paying a visit to the island of Iona. Before jeaving the Island, the Scotchman, who was a very dwarfish personage, WAS harassing the rest of the party by continual- ly chattering about the fine physique of his ancestors interred on the Island, and his descent from a long line of worthies: When they came to the plot on the island 19 which these relatives were interred, the guide re- ferred to them as a race of giants The Irishman being somewhat noettled, looked down on his puny manikin and said : ‘By the powers that be, my little man, ye may wel! say ye had a descent, and sure, what a terrible one it was too |” Pedigree is not to be belittled, but it is far more legible and doubly valuable if written on

The following isa summary of railroad construction in the United States in the first nine months of 1890, showing that 3,- 782 miles of new road have already been built in thirty-nine states and on 212 different lines. The states showing the largest of amount of new mileage are: Georgia, 323 miles ; Montana, 312 ; North Oarolins, 226; and Washington, 207. The only states and territories in which no track has been laid this year are New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Con- necticut, Delaware, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nevada and Utah. It is estimated that the total construction in 1890 will be from 6,000 to 6,500 miles against 5,200 reported in 1889.

On the 2lst ult. a tornado over East Stoke farm in Wareham, leaving extraordinary wreck along its fifty yard wide path. If this kind of thing were ikely to be frequent in England in future, it might be a wise precaution to screw all the furniture down on the floors to keep it from being sucked over to the fireplace and up the chimney.
