Pre-registration for full-time and part- time students for the Second Semester of 1995- 96 will take place from 14 November to 4 December. Pre-registration material will be available at the Registrar’s Office in Kelley Building, starting Monday, November 6th.

Students registering for English 101 (English Composition) are asked to choose three sections in order of preference. They will be notified only if they are not admitted to anY one of the three sections they select.

Also, students registering in English 101, 192, Psychology 201, 222, 242, 272, Soc 282 or other courses with enrollment limitations as noted in the calendar are cautioned that they must attend no later than the second class or their names will be struck from the class lists.

The deadline for pre-registration will be Monday, 4 December. We regret that no pre- registration for either full-time or part-time students can be accepted after Monday, 4 December.

It’s that time of the term again, and complaints are coming in from students who say ‘The library is too noisy!”’

This is a friendly reminder. Watch your voices, especially in the foyer. When library personnel ask you to be more quiet, they are responding to the concerns of your fellow students.

Canada may be a young country by global standards, but already our language has acquired such a distinctiveness that the folks who bring us the Oxford Dictionary have decided that we warrant our own dictionary. Words such as Mountie, SIN (Social Insurance Number), and loonie help to define our culture and will be included in this new publication.

So what exactly makes a Canadian dictionary Canadian? Katherine Barber, editor-in-chief for Oxford University Press’ new foray into language will be addressing this question at a special public presentation at 8:00 pm on the evening of Friday, November 10 at the Prince Edward Hotel. She will be looking for likely additions to the new dictionary from the audience, so everyone is invited to bring along their favourite Canadianisms.

Ms Barber will be taking part in the Annual General meeting of the Atlantic provinces Linguistics Association in Charlottetown on November 10th and 11th. The theme of the meeting is Making Linguistics Accessible. Workshop topics range from the general usefulness of linguistics for teachers or professionals who do auditory testing of children, to genderrelated discussions on the use of words such as homosexual, Ms, and the wider issues of sexism and sexual harassment.

The program is designed to be of interest to the general public as well as linguists and anyone can take part in the sessions. For more information contact the coordinator of the conference, Terry Pratt, at the University of Prince Edward Island (566-0677) or register at the Prince Edward Hotel from 1:00-5:00 on Friday, November 10.
