sheriff MacDonald gave evidence that he and Hohibition Qctor Mann, on the evening of March 30th. last, made a raid on the omce of the defendant and found there, in a corner of a box of books. about half l Maddy” of rum. He questioned the defendant as to where he had ob- tained the liquor and wes told that he got it from a man in summerside. whom he did not know. He (the witness) told him that hs hI better be quick and flnii out.

Mc- callum, counsel for the defence, Shorifl MacDonald stated that sub- sequently he had several conversa- tions with the defendantas a result of which a Sunamarside party was charged in the Prohibition Court with selling liquor. convicted and fined. Asked ‘by IVIr. MaoCdllum whether a promise was made to the defendant that the ease against him would not be proceeded with, wit- pass replied that the defendant might have believed so but was not told so by him. Asked further why the case against defendant had not been proceeded with at the time, crimes said that he did not know; but it was at the request of Chief In- specter Haywood.

The defendant in giving evidence. in his own behslflstaied, that he had not received any papers and did not know that the charge had been pre- ferred against him until he got the summons on Wednesday last. This, he said. would not have been served unless ha bad brought an assault cue against Prohibition Inspector iidann, attire beginning of the wselz. Prom conversations he had had with Sheri! MacDonald he was led to bo- licve that his case would not be brought up; if he gave certain in- formation. He also stated that he had had conversation with Mr. Brown on the matter both at that time and on _t_l_1e present occasion.

LONDON, Oct. 28.—A strange case of rural innocence in Poland is re- ported in the Warsaw Press. A well- ! to-do peasant went to Warsaw from his native village to so some shop- ping. At the market he heard two men discussing the bad times. One man said he had decided to emigrate in the United States. The other man was not impressed. and assured him that America was no use now for those seeking fortunes, and that the moon was in be the next great para- dise for ambitious emigrants.

The peasant opened his big ears wider, and heard what wonderful things had been written in the news- papers about airshlps and projectiles going to the moon. Apparently, that poetic planet had already been reach- ed. and revealed land rich with gold

this hiahly interesting discussion. he soon discovered that the man of knowledge was a mining engineer. who he'd actually had the good for- tune to acquire some of the valuable land on the moon. Soon the peasant was offering the engineer 'a ‘large sum of money for‘ Just. a small portion c‘! the land which was to make him a millionaire. Finally the engineer agreed to this.

A lawyer was found. A contract was drawn up. Money changed hands. But the drink which accompanied all this legal business stint the peasant l0 sleep in the inn where the" ' tlons took place. When he awoke the strangers and lawyer had-disappear- ed with his money, and when he in- formed the police, who at first took him, for a lunatic, he discovered sadly that his is ocence and cupidity had .coat him a large sum of hard-earned‘
