Che Public Accounts.

We have again to thank the Govern- ment and Mr. R. F. DeBlois, the Vrovineial Auditor, for a full, clear aud intelligible statement of the Public Accounts, It will surprise many persons aud please all, to find that there isa surplus on the transactions of the past year — though the expenditure, amounting to $279,045.35, exceeds the estimates which were $249,379.04. It is needless tosay that this excess is not due to any extravagance of the Govern- menut—but chiefly to the increasing de mands o! the Education Department and the wet summer of last year, which necessitated the payment of a larger amount than was anticipated in the re pair of roads avd bridges.

Education cost $105,185.09, against $101,193.41 in the previous year, or about $40,600 a year more thau when the Davies Administration was iu power

land were sold to 103 persors tor $10,060.47 during the past year.

But a portion of) these lands are held by squatters and | some of the estates are “greatly deficient | of the quantity of laud which they were | represented to contain.” So that the quantity of laud the Goverament have) vet to dispose of is really much less than the amount pamed. ‘The receipts of the year are $46,033.74—a falling off of | $5,317.29 as compared with the amount | received in 1883. As soon as this sch mo is carried out, our palace steamers Princess of Wales and St. Lawrevce will disappear from our waters—but it will be a work of time. The P. E. The meas- ure was lobbied through both branches of the Legislature and became law. Mr. Hackett’s abuse would not be worth noticing, except that he is a representative for Prince County in the Commons, and | cannot allow such charges, made against me by their representative, to pass un- voticed. If Mr. Hackett’s charge that I am a renegade of the lowest type be true, His Honor the Governor is open vo the same charge for changing parties, as well as several of his followers at the time.

Industfial Education.

Last evening, notwithstanding that there were three other organizations in full blast, including the concert in the Y. M C, A, Hall, the meeting of the Literary and Scientific Society was fairly attended. Mr. Robert Smal'wood read his paper on ‘* In- dustrial Education,” which in fact was rather the outlines of a written essay,as he said he had not had suflicient time to fully prepare it,and which he filled out as he weut on by very cogent arguments and sugge:- Mr. Simallwood urged the necessity
