Haggart and | Patterson were seen regarding the state- ment that Sir John Thompson would not occupy the Premiership at the vext elec- tion, but would resign to become a mem- ber of the Imperial Privy Council and a law Lord. The Minister of Railways said, with considerable emphasis: “I had no such conversation as was reported with anyone. The whole thing,” observed the Minister, “ia a sogndasioutere canard. We hope to follow Sir John Thompson at the next election, and we trust he will live to lead us for mauy years. As to the date of the elections, I have no information to give, They may take place in March, or a year from that date.”

‘Sr. Pau, Minn., Dec. 7.—The fact has just been published that in the arch-dio- vese of St. Paul Catholics may join any secret society except the Masonic order. Judge Kelly has joined the Knights of Pythias, although he is one of the most prominent Catholic laymen in America, and consderable talk has resulted, as other prominent Catholics are also joining. One of them said today: “The Archbishop has decided that a Catholic may join any secret order except the Masons, so that Catholics are at liberty to doas they please in this respect.”

Wasnineton, Dec. 7.—The long delayed Chinese treaty has at Jast arrived at Wash- ington. Late this afternoon Secretary Greesham and Mr. Yang Ya, Chinese min- iater, exchanged the final ratifications and nothing now remains to be doue but to promulgate the treaty, and it is expected that the promulgation will follow in a day or two.

Toronto, Dec. 6—The second patient treated with the diphtheria anti-toxine, died last night at the Isolatton Hospital. The serum did not seem to take any effect whatever upon the child, a boy of six years. In the first case sernm from Ber lin was used and was eyccessful, In the present instance the compound was receiv- ed from New York. A third patient is now under treatment.

Costaxrivorte, Dec. 7.—The Sultan yesterday depatched an invitation to the President of the United States to partici- pate through his representative in a mixed commission of the powers te visit A> menia and investigate the conditions there. President Cleveland declined the invitation, but intimated his willingness to permit an Armenian representative to accompany the proposed commission in an independent capacity. The Sultan therenpon cabled the President inviting the appointment of such representatives, and to-day learned that the United States would accept the modified invitation.

Detroit, Dec. 7.—A family named Me- Goff, living on the outskirts of this city, is just now celebrating the arrival of the 20th baby within their domestic circle. Mrs. McGoff is exactly 38 years of age, asd what is more remarkable, none of the births have been either twins or triplets. All the family are well, bub McGoff is wondering if he will have to procure a license iy order to clear the law.

Loypox, Dec. 7.—Lord Winchelsea has received letters of regret from Lord Hose- bery and Salisbury, whem he invited to attend the eongreas of the Agricultural Union. He re- marks, however, that the depression does not appear to be confined to the United Kingdom.
